My weight loss has stopped!
« on: October 29, 2011, 05:45:10 AM »
I started my Paleoish WOE back in March after my Dr told me to.  I am 6'3", 64 years old and started at 265 lbs.  I have a very rapid weight loss of about 5 lbs a week for several weeks and then it began to slow and finally got down to around 220lbs.  Of course, that changes from one time of day to the next depending on where I weigh and what I'm wearing etc.  I am still hovering around the 220-225 range.

I have relaxed my Paleoness somewhat, but wouldn't think my trangressions would make a lot of difference????

For example,  I have salad with dressing now, I have cocktail sauce or tartar sauce on shrimp, I'll have an occasional baked potato (of course I'll load it up), and once ever week or so, I'll have grits with a cheese omelet.  Beer drinking is practically nonexistant, but wine and a mixed drink are allowed.
There is a burger or Grouper sandwich, but that is maybe once a month.

Maybe 220ish is where I need to be.  I am very happy to be there and look and feel good and my 'numbers' are the best they have been in many, many years.

Now you know that for you it does make a difference. How strict you need to be tends to vary from person to person with regards to weight loss. It seems you need to be quite strict.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

In the past, other posters have seen weight loss stalls from just a couple of slices of cheese a week, and measurable weight gain from one or two slices of bread.

Cocktail sauce and salad dressing normally include sugar, and baked potatoes and grits of course have plenty of starch.  Your current levels of cheats are definitely enough to make a difference.

Now, if you're happy with where you are, maybe that's fine for you.  I think it's likely you could lose more weight if you went back to being more strict, though.

Depending on the mixer, mixed drinks can have a hell of a lot of sugar.

Thanks guys,  That is what I suspected even though I didn't think they would make a whole lot of difference.  I am fortunate that I do  not have some of the digestive problems that some have, so my efforts have been, pretty much, weight loss and the added benefits of that.
I think our trip to New England with all the extra eating there and just being off our routine may have contruited as well.
Thanks again for the toughts.

It must be a lot harder to stick with strict paleo if non-paleo food doesn't make you feel ill. Good luck!

My question is - when is the weight loss supposed to start? Right when you start Paleo? Two weeks in? After your body gets used to ketosis? I've tried this diet for a week, and I lost 2-3 pounds. I'm not giving up or stopping paleo by any means - I've been feeling too good to stop, but I'd kind of like to know what to expect in the next while. I've been pretty strict about it - no grains/wheat, no dairy, no beans/legumes, no processed sugar, etc.

I think everybody is different. I didn't start paleo for weight loss, so I didn't notice I was losing weight until I noticed my clothes were falling off me. I don't own any bathroom scales, so I weighed myself next time I was at the Dr, and I'd lost 19kg over three months or so.

I've heard quite a lot of people lose a significant amount in the first few weeks if they moved from high carb to low carb when they went paleo. That's probably what happened to me - I used to live on wheat.

Jean,
I am very fortunate and thankful for my wife.  Without her, this would not be possible at all.  I could probably do OK for a day or two, and then.....  Her support and, of course meal prep is what has made this work so well for me.
We do have distractions like our trip to New England and then we had a new grand daughter born a coujple of weeks ago, so going to another city and all involved with that let us slip a little as well.
It's funny how life just keeps getting in the way of most of our good intentions.

8Maggie8,
Of course men are different from women, I've heard.  But I started losing weight pretty quickly.  I was averaging about 5 lbs a week for the 1st month or so.  Of course a big part of that was that I stopped drinking 6-8-10 beers a day.  Huge difference!
