Progress Report
« on: May 20, 2011, 04:14:54 PM »
After 5 weeks on the paleo diet, here's what I have found.  When I started I weighed 200, dropped to 185 and am now back at 190.  I don't care about body weight but here's something very important.  When I started my bp was averaging 145/95, even with meds to keep it in check.  When I was down at 185, my bp was down in the very low 100's over 70's.  I was very dizzy.  I discontinued all bp meds.  My weight went back up to 190 but my bp is still averaging 117/77.  My discovery is that weight reduction isn't the cause of blood pressure reduction, but carb reduction is.  I felt sick and dizzy for about a month, fuzzy headed, headaches, the works.  Now I feel great.  No more stomach problems (gerd, gas, bloating.)  More energy than I've had in a long time.  I just feel light although my total weight loss is just 10 pounds.  My pants are loose in the waist but my shirts are still tight.  All in all, I'm liking the way this is going.  If you can get over the hump or transition in getting your body in tune with the diet, I think you're going to be alright. ;D

I started the diet for the same reason as I've suspected for quite some time that my hypertension issue was somehow metabolic related. Without any meds my BP runs about 200/120. The only med I can take right now that does anything only gets it down to the 170/100 area. Three weeks into Paleo, it was down to about 118/84. In that time I lost only 7 lbs., which only represents a little over 2% of my total body weight but my well intended but clueless doctor insisted that the weight loss is why my BP dropped so sharply. I reminded him that my blood pressure problems started when I was fit and thin and in my early 20s and that the reason I thought my BP went down so quickly and sharply this time was because of the reduction in carbs. He scoffed at that but not wanting to argue he just said, "Well, whatever you are doing is working so just keep doing it."

When is the medical community going to get their collective brain wrapped around the fact that our crappy modern diet is killing us? I guess there's no money in that though and as they say, "follow the money."
The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.

JayJay, great progress in the bp department.  Looks like you knocked it out of the park.  Like you say, there is no money in any cure, but boatloads of it in the treatment.  All we are is repeat customers to the medical establishment and if they cured us, they'd have no customers.  Silly isn't it?  Follow the money...
