Quick loss, then plateau...
« on: April 28, 2011, 08:34:36 AM »
So I've been back on Paleo (well, Paleo plus additional low carb factors like no fruit). Doctor recommended it as I am a type 1 diabetic and he said I can drastically reduce insulin requirements and normalize my blood sugars as well (ie bring them to those of a non-diabetic). Not bad for a type 1.

Thing is, first two, maybe three weeks, I lost almost 5 kilos. Then for the past 3 weeks I've been stationary. I'm about 176cm and 96 kg. I was, before the diet, obviously the same height, but almost 101kg.

Why have I plateaued? Its not like I've slimmed down (though obviously I have, as stomach size (visceral fat, inflamation, etc) has significantly reduced, but why the plateau? I would have expected it to continue for a while.

Diet is a good mix of meat and veggies. I probably eat more veggies than most on this forum (around 50 - 65% of each meal). Ironically, despite loving me some meat, I'd like to even increase the percentage of vegetables consumed.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm reasonably fit, though not in tremendous shape (do regular exercise, physical training, etc).

Thanks,

Me

It happens to everyone.  When you start a low carb diet like paleo, you lose about 2-4kg water weight depending on what size you were to start with.
Almost everyone starting paleo loses 5-10 pounds and their 'wheat belly' in the first 2-3 weeks, followed by slower steady weight loss.

The best way to monitor progress on paleo is fat % or tape measure.

In other news, how wonderful that your doctor recommended paleo!
Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

Doctor is a type 1 diabetic (like me), and wants (like me) a normal life, with normal blood sugars, and no complications (glaucoma, gangrene, heart disease, etc). So he thinks outside the box. At the same time, he did approve milk, but recommends cream over whole milk and whole milk over skim. And also low-carb (due to the diabetes part).

Just hang in there the weight will slowly drop off and as you get into better shape it will make you look better more than weigh less.
No expectations, no disappointments!

When are you taking the insulin?  You need periods with no insulin in your system to lose weight.

Been there and done that for almost three weeks didn't lose a pound, and in fact even gained a pound.  But losing inches still.  and now the weight is coming down more steadily but surely at a lower rate.  I feel great.  And am looking better all the time.  And my Doug looks fantastic.  No washboard abs but then again he's going to be 80 in July so I don't hope for a miracle!  LOL  His BP is way down as well which is good.  He is a little depressed however at now having to look at getting himself a new wardrobe!  But we will wait until he reaches his goal weight before we think about that.  As for women, I think all of us probably have almost complete wardrobes in boxes in the back of our closets - I know I do.  From size 6 all the way up to size 20 which were put in a box a month or so ago.  So am now wearing a "smaller" size and hoping to get back down to the 8's and 6's which I adored!  Of course I may ahve to get some new things too!

Hang in there all of you people on the plateau.  Don't get discouraged.  It happens to all of us!

Well, thought I'd check in here. Y'all who said it just slowed down are right. I'm dropping about a 1kg a week, which is good.

When am I taking insulin? Periods of no insulin in my system? No insulin in my system would be very bad for me, as the body releases a constant low level stream of glucose. As a type 1 diabetic, not having any insulin is, well, bad. I'm really confused by what you mean here, Warren.

Carbohydrate intake is generally much lower on paleo than on a "normal" diet.  That means one shouldn't need as much insulin.  It might be possible for a type 1 diabetic to continue using enough insulin to prevent weight loss by maintaining elevated insulin levels at all times, which is why I inquired.

However, since you are losing weight at about the expected long term rate, it seems there isn't a problem.
