Hmmm.... I just can't fathom that a split board would be the same as my snowboard now. Next time have some money I want to invest in some climbing skis or a splitboard but I don't know which one. Maybe you can help me out. Is a splitboard actually a decent snowboard??
I ride-
Solid boards- Never Summer Titan TX, Never Summer Legacy, Burton Canyon
Splitboards- 2 Voile Mojo's, Voile Mtn.Gun, Voile Split Decision
I actually prefer my new Mojo's to any of my solid boards. Splitboards have really come a long in terms of weight and performance. They skin great, split ski pretty well and ride really really well. Now that there are soft boot, splitboard specific bindings life has really improved the soft boot riders. My GF and I use AT boots.
Splitboard is the way to go for backcountry. I'm not just saying that because I'm sponsored.

Slowshoes suck!
Approach skis are great but you always have to carry something on your back, board going up, skis going down.
The board is like a sail on your back sometimes. I can't count the number of times my GF has caught a limb with her approach skis while riding down.
I'm really excited that my GF has a splitboard this season. It's going to open up a whole lot more opportunities for us.
