Update so far - sorry no photos lol
« on: May 31, 2011, 07:36:35 AM »
My second week ended and was not very pleased with the results... but I guess I only have my self to blame?

First week was great, lost 3 lbs. But this week, only 1. I am thinking it is due to my lack of exercise. First week I walked about an hour a day, 5 days in the 7. 2nd week, I only did 30 minutes of walking twice. (fatigue and headache). This week I worked on taking on more calories, breaking the 1000 mark, except for the last three days where it was 500-800.

So what did I learn? I need to get my butt on the freaking treadmill to really see results. -_-

My goal is to lose 30 lbs but I guess 20 would be my realistic goal lol. So in this rate, I guess I will be posting after photos in 20 weeks.  :-*

Weight loss usually slows down after the first week or two on paleo.  If you can sustain a loss of 1 lb per week, that's great!  20 weeks is not so long in the greater scheme of things.

Don't get discouraged Ayami. The body has to make a lot of adjustments the first few weeks on any "radically new" eating plan. As you have probably read here, many people experience flu-like symptoms, dizziness, headaches, and other problems, which are manifestations of the myriad of adjustments the body is making as it adapts to its new energy source. The longer you have been eating bad foods, the longer it will take for your body to adjust and start working efficiently. Just stick with it and give it some time.

I was lucky because I switched to Paleo after being on a no-high-glycemic-carb diet for many, many years so it didn't take long for my body to start shedding weight on Paleo. But I still had the "paleo flu", the headaches, dizziness, etc. When I transitioned from my old SAD to the low carb diet many years ago though, the transition was horrible and took a long time (months). Just hang in there.

You DID stop eating corn, right?  ;)

By the way, dropped in on your blog and saw something there that jumped out at me.

On day 10, your lesson for the day was, "Do not skip meals".

Then on day 14 you got a headache and I noticed you skipped breakfast.

Your day 10 lesson was a good one, don't skip meals, especially breakfast. Every time I do that I get a roaring headache later in the day.

Cheers!

It is very hard not to become discouraged haha. But being on this forum helps a lot. :)
I guess my body is mad at me for not giving it carbs and feeding it so much fat lol. Stubborn brat!!
But I really cant imagine how hard it would be for someone who had a much extreme change. *shudders*

I will try to do better this third week and see how this goes. I felt like crap on the first week but have been ok since. (except for the one bad headache).

HAHA yes!!! No more corn. When I tell people they cannot believe it. They think I am nuts for being on this diet. I just tell them that so far, I know I cannot eat dairy, soy, fruits, carbs, starch, corn and green beans. LOL.

Jay~ yes you are correct and I made a mistake on Day 14. I did force one egg and one bacon down for breakfast. Even though I am in no mood to eat, I just have to force it down it seems. The only other thing is that I do not feel the energy spikes that I did on my first week... Am I not eating enough protein?

Ayami I think you're doing well! The last 10-20 pounds of weight loss is always the slowest as your body is nearing its "set point" - you are unlikely to get the dramatic weight loss that somebody who was very overweight will get. So long as it's moving in the right direction, it's all good.

I lost 19 kilos in a couple of months, but I was really overweight - on the border of official obesity - I didn't look that bad but I could feel it. If it takes me six months more to get rid of the last 7 kilos I'll be fine with that.

I have been feeling bleh, tired and bleh for the last few days. I have been trying to eat as much as possible but, again, weekends are hard. I think I counted about 500-600 on friday because I skipped lunch (wasnt hungry). Yesterday I had brunch with eggs, veggie and bacon, for dinner i had porkchops and zucchinis and also made kelp chips. I did have a little bit of carbs.

Today I woke up sore... like all over body sore. Is this the flu like symptoms people talk about? But why is it happening after I've been doing this for 3 weeks? I dont feel sick so I dont think I am...

This morning I made a chicken, bacon, veggie omelet.  Any thoughts?

Think of it as another week closer to your goal.  Just a few more months.

Don't force yourself to eat if you don't feel like it.  A little extra to hold off a headache need not be "as much as possible".  The soreness does not sound like "low carb flu", but it might be actual flu.  Paleo doesn't make one immune to colds, it just reduces the symptoms.

Ha, ha, ha...typical Asian girl! You think a pound isn't much because it's...well...only ONE!  ::)

Every Asian girl I've ever known, my wife included, lets this logic get in the way of their weight loss success.

If I told you I weighed 250 lbs. and lost 5 lbs. in a week, you'd be impressed, right? Well, that's only 2% of my total weight. If you weigh 120 lbs. and lost 2 lbs. in a week, that is still only 2% of your total body weight. Same rate of weight loss.

I don't know what your current weight is, and I'm not stupid enough to ask, but I'll bet 1 lb. is still a decent percentage of your total weight, and well within the range of what you should be expecting for weight loss on a weekly basis at this stage. Don't get discouraged, be realistic. Losing weight too rapidly is not healthy. Slow and steady is good, as long as its going down. When you feel better, you'll exercise more and ramp it up a little, but don't beat yourself up in the mean time.

Cheers!

So what did I learn? I need to get my butt on the freaking treadmill to really see results.

depends on what you're doing on the tread mill my dear!  If it's tabata, then you will really see results.  If it's chronic cardio...not so much

anyway, a pound a week is actually very good.  But seriously, 500cals a day.  Are you insane?!?

Back in December I tried to go sub 1000 every day and spent the entire time exhausted, could hardly find the energy to stand up!
Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

If you want to burn more fuel I think you'd be better off ditching most of the cardio and doing some weights. It's muscle that keeps your metabolism higher. You'd probably feel more energetic as well. Plenty of Omega-3s in the morning up the metabolism too, so you could try having some oily fish eg wild salmon for breakfast every day.

You can't really control weight with cardio exercise - the amount needed to burn any significant amount of calories is insane!
