How does this not feeling sick but being sick thing work? Why are paleo-ers not able to feel sick? But once we eat bad food we start feeling sick? Very interesting.

Hm, this is kind of complicated.  I'll see if I can make it understandable.

The first thing to know is that most of the symptoms people get when they are sick are not from the actual infection itself.  Rather, they are from the body's immune response to the infection.  Antibodies and one type of white blood cell kills off infected cells, another type of white blood cell - macrophages - engulf and consume the dead cells.  Extra mucus is generated to prevent any new germs from reaching and infecting live cells, and to carry detritus out of the body, leading to congestion and runny noses.  Coughs are an attempt by the body to expel bacteria from the air passages before they can become too much of a problem.

The body has been highly optimized to deal with infections.  As a result, on the diet the body is designed for - a paleo diet - the symptoms are mild.  The immune system works efficiently, and it doesn't take a lot of mucus, coughing, and sneezing to stay healthy.  From the standpoint of a paleolithic human, this makes sense - one needs to fight off the cold, but one also needs to stay fit enough to face down other predators if needed, even when one has a cold.  At most it might be beneficial to feel a bit tired or sleepy so as to know to take it easy for a few days.

Unfortunately, neolithic foods interfere with this optimization.  For example, glucose interferes with the efficiency of macrophages, by displacing the vitamin C that macrophages need to function properly.  For reasons such as that, eating a lot of carbohydrates, which are in part broken down into glucose in the digestive tract, seems to interfere with immune system efficiency.  With a less efficient immune system, infections make it farther before they are stopped, and the body then needs to step up the immune response beyond what it would need to be on a paleo diet.  The result is the stronger and more debilitating symptoms that the general population has when they get sick.

Is it safe to say 1g of protein per 2 lbs of my ideal goal weight?

Yes, that would be a good amount of protein.

I think I just learned more than I have ever learned about the human body… (or science for that matter) in what you just wrote Warren. But then again I have failed every science and biology class I had ever taken. (true story). Do you work in the field or are you just straight up a geek when it comes to this stuff?? (no offense geeks are cool!)

This makes a lot of sense because I grew up being sick and feeling awful all of the time. I’d go to the gym and get sick because of the germs, if someone was sick at work, I’d get sick. I guess this would be an added bonus to my weight loss!

Thank you for this, it made my day! I’m going to quote you in my blog if you don’t mind lol.

Ayami,

Vons has fresh, wild Copper River Salmon on sale this week for $7.99/lb. I can't wait every year for the Copper River Salmon to show up in the stores. It is incredible. The only problem when it goes on sale is that it gets snatched up pretty quickly. I went to the Vons near me today and they only had two small pieces left and the sale just started yesterday. Check the one closest to you. Good stuff!

Jay

SUPER!!! thanks JAY!!!

I'm just a geek about everything, so no offense taken!  Most of what I've learned about this topic I've learned from this site, and reading articles directly or indirectly related to this site, chasing down links and doing searches.  Three years ago I was the one asking all the newbie questions!

A 4oz serving of salmon contains about 1.7g of omega-3, much more than the eggs. Sardines and mackerel contain even more. It might be worth trying for a while to see if it gives you more energy. I find fish lighter on the stomach than eggs or meat in the morning, too. Bacon and eggs would usually be a lunch food for me.

Hm this is very helpful, thank you. I've never had fish for breakfast... do you just eat it on its own??

No I would have some leftover veg with it, if I have any to use up, or a piece of fruit. If I have fresh fish I use that, but I don't have a good fishmonger here unfortunately so that's not often. My supermarket sells frozen kippers but they are quite salty so I don't eat them all the time. I also get packs of frozen wild salmon fillet that come bagged in individual servings inside the box. It's easy to take as many serves as you need and pop them in the fridge the night before to defrost. I don't find them too bad actually - not that I'd use it for sashimi but it's fine for frying. Or I just grab a can of sardines - cheap and easy. I get no-added-salt water-pack sardines and mash them up with lemon juice and black pepper. I especially like that with celery.

I try to eat seafood every day. If I'm not eating it for breakfast I'll have it for lunch or dinner. Usually a dinner of whole baked fish, poached flat fish, seared (blue) sashimi-quality tuna steaks (when I can get good fresh tuna - not often), or prawns made up as garlic prawns or green curry. Or canned fish for lunch.

When my younger DD finishes school, we're planning on renting a small studio apartment in Melbourne and staying there during the week, and then we'll have access to great seafood. I have dreams of beautiful fresh meaty grouper fillets (Kerala fish curry?), live lobsters, rows and rows of bright-eyed shiny whole fish at my local fishmonger ... yummmmm ... DH commutes into Melbourne for work, but it's not so easy dragging large quantities of fish home on the train.

Yes, fresh fish is expensive, and I'm finding I'm spending more on groceries generally on paleo. But then we're eating a lot less take-out, which makes up for that. I'm happy to cut back on other things to eat well. People used to spend a far greater proportion of their income on food - I think we've just gotten used to spending very little because the industrial food machine makes food so cheap, but all the "food" they're producing is rubbish!

week 4 results, kind of bummed...

didnt lose a single ounce :(
maybe because I didnt get on the treadmill more than once this week...
the only thing I did differently was eat MORE. Now my brain is saying, eat more, lose none.

I ate extra fatty meats 3+ times this week but I did have 2 apples over the weekend with unsalted peanut butter. I guess I will blame it on all of that above. No more apples and not so much fatty meats. And will need to get my butt off the couch and start working!!

I have been MIA!

just a quick report. I have not fallen off the paleo diet, but had a week of little cheats here and there, gained 3 lbs, felt horrible and am back on track again. I started fasting 2 days ago and am feeling good. Not forcing myself to eat breakfast and still not feeling hungry. To date, since I started Paleo in May, I have lost 10 lbs. :) Very very happy. I still can't SEE the results but I can feel it, less bumps and clothes fitting well. I think I'd like to lose 15 more but realistically... maybe 10. I am not doing this just to lose weight, but also to feel better physically... and it has been working :).

I did have a bad weekend with non stop headaches and it was due to being dehydrated. I was stressed and over worked, had only 1 cup of water a day without realizing it, boy did I pay for it. And for those who said I shouldnt drink unless I felt thirsty... I need to force down water to prevent my headaches. Other than that, I am happy as a clam.

Nice to see you again! I agree - 10lb since May is a good weight loss, especially for somebody who wasn't very overweight to start with. It's great to hear you're feeling healthier too.   :)

Your photos look great!  I can see the difference, and I'm not sure you have another 10 lb to lose.

I think if your doctor tells you to quit paleo, you should get a new doctor.

Aw thank you. If I could lose a bit on the thigh, stomach and a little on the arms, I think it would add up to 10 lbs. Going to keep up with the small weight exercises to see what happens/

The doctor thing is pretty funny. She suggested not eating anymore red meat or pork... so a paleo diet with just fish and chicken. Is that even possible? We'll see after the results arrive. :)
