Weird progress report about taste.
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:49:03 AM »
Okay this is what I consider real progress for me. Goodness knows what I thought I was tasting before paleo but 3 weeks in and I can't believe my taste buds have changed so much.
Tomatoes are delicious! I could never eat prawns without sauce before and didn't enjoy them, now I can't believe how sweet they are. Today I ate baked pumpkin and I've never liked it before, it was like eating a very yummy sweet potato. And my cheat today was a small piece of 85% chocolate. Last time I bought a block of that I had one piece and threw the whole lot in the bin. Today how sweet and chocolatey it was..
Food suddenly tastes so different!

just wait til you develop a 'fat' tooth.  Then you'll think nothing of licking grease off your plate or slurping bone marrow straight from the bone  ;D

Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!

I suspect that a standard western diet actually keeps taste buds injured through excessive sugar.

Try eating without condiments. zero condiments.
That will wake your taste buds even more.
I'm on Raw Paleo diet but I have kids to feed on cooked paleo diet.

I agree. I found my taste for very sweet foods was gone within about three weeks. Now anything sweter than a piece of fruit doesn't taste great. I've just gotten back from a long weekend away. At one point I was stuck at a cafe with nothing paleo on offer and I really needed to eat something. I chose a piece of gluten-free orange and almond cake, one of those ones make with oranges, almond meal, eggs and sugar. It was the best they had. It tided me over till I could get real food, but it tasted too sweet so I didn't enjoy it.

Yes I'm loving fruit. I splurged today on a punnet of strawberries ($7.00!) and I thought I was in heaven.
It made me think how people say tomatoes etc just don't taste the same anymore. I think they do and I agree the western diet has stunted our taste buds. Food tastes like it did when I was a kid and had a plainer diet.
I'm enjoying rediscovering foods all over again. Giving up condiments I don't know if I could do that..still like my salt and pepper on food and lime juice on my salads :)

I find that all the crap I enjoyed when I started is just too sweet for me to eat now.  That's just an added bonus, keeps you from putting that stuff in your mouth  8)
Someday when I finally keel over and stop moving I want to make sure I'm running at the time :-)

Last week I had a sip of my son's Coke, because I haven't had a soda since January and figured I would have a treat.  OMG SWEETEST THING EVAR.  I don't miss soda any more.

I often end dinner with a small bowl of mixed frozen fruit. I went back to recheck the label the other day to be sure there was no sugar (there was not), because the fruit juice at the bottom of the bowl by the time I finished was so sweet. I am loving how much more I enjoy my food these days. I was never a fan of copious amounts of sauce and condiments (except for sweet and sour pork I suppose), but I still used them in stir fries and what not. These days I will happily fry up various greens and vegetables and only lightly season them if at all. My current favourite right now is about half and half paprika and basil.
