I bought on impulse a butternut squash. Can someone recommend the best way to prepare it?

Most often I would steam it and serve with butter. Also good roasted in with the meat, or cut into bite-sized chunks, roll in fat, sprinkle with Italian herbs and bake. Can also be used for pumpkin soup but I prefer a sweeter pumpkin for that.

FRY

ok, that is nice, but I'm kidding

Parboil briefly then roast - smallish cubes, hot oven

Can be good as soup, add some carrots/parsnips, spices, and either bacon or ccnut milk for fat

Or, if you can slice it thin enough, fry it and make crisps (chips)

HOWEVER
i would leave it for at least 3-4 days to ripen before you eat it

Stuffed with ground beef or sausage and spice is nice.  It is really really hard so cutting it can be tough.  That is why slice it in half (one cut), clean the seeds (Baked the seed on a tray is nice to make tasty snack) spice the flesh stuff and bake until soft and the meat is cooked.  I agree witj to let is sit a while before you use it.  Theses buggers can hand out a long while and not go bad.

Even more!
When I harvested my butternut squashes I had one a couple of weeks after they were cut and...it was totally tasteless. I wasn't happy at all with the whole harvest.

Now it's been 3 months since they have been taken off the plant and they taste great.
