Carob or unsweetened cocoa paleo??
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:05:09 AM »
Was just wondering if Carob or unsweetened cocoa is truly Paleo?? Have been seeing recipes that call for both of these and was just wondering...

I'm pretty plain and simple when it comes to eating paleo. I eat meat, veggies, fruit and nuts. I don't do a lot of baking, or mixing of ingredients. But thought I may try something different to mix it up a little bit.

Unsweetened cocoa is not "truly" paleo, but it's a cheat that doesn't seem to cause too many problems for most people.  I eat it occasionally, in small amounts.

carob is a seed.  I would say avoid

Cocoa is modern palatable.  I drink it every day - I don't have much issue with it personally as it contains a decent amount of fat and flavanoids.

I consider it about as paleo as coconut, personally.  I think it is quite addictive though

I like it with vanilla and chili

Thanks for the info....looking for something to help with my sweet tooth. Found a recipe for "paleo" candy bars that called for unsweetened cocoa. Will avoid it for now, it will eventually get better ;)

This is a good question and a good thread. I've been wondering the same thing. However, I've found that after eating paleo for only 2 weeks, I don't crave sweets. Not even chocolate!

I'm 3 weeks into it...and still have the sugar/chocolate craving...Last time I did Paleo for a significant time, it only took a few days and I no longer had the craving. This time around...it's been tough!

If you must eat dark chocolate, keep it at 85% or over.

One of the things you want to do is manage your sweet tooth and minimise sugar consumption.

I have cocoa made with water and no sweetening.

The seed is not the part that is eaten as carob. The seeds are separated from the pods and used to manufacture a vegetable gum. The rest of the pod is ground up to make carob powder. The pods can be eaten raw - just pull the ripe pods off the tree, spit out the seeds and chew. Probably quite paleo IMO but I'd only eat it as survival food. Carob tastes like cardboard. The trees are very productive. If I had a large property I'd plant a pair for stock fodder and in case of the zombie apocolypse.

Agreed.  Even 85% can tank your immune system and cause you to get sick.  Ask me how I know.
