Cheating guidelines: if you choose to drink
« on: October 11, 2009, 10:55:13 PM »
My chronic cheat so far is having a drink or two during social outings. Other than the antioxidant effects of red wine, I was surprised to find out that my drinks of choice (bourbon or scotch with no mixers) have some good qualities, too.

Highest TAS values were given by armagnac, cognac, and bourbon whiskey, all three of which tended toward the highest concentrations of phenols... Wood aging is the most likely source of phenols and furans in distilled spirits. Those beverages exposed to this treatment contain significant antioxidant activity, which is between the ranges for white and red wines, with the potential to augment the antiatherosclerotic functions attributable to the ethanol that they contain.

I agree, when I cheat it's usually with alcohol. I love stouts and porters!

People always say "There's so many carbs in beer!" but I haven't really found that to be true, I did a lot of research recently on it. Certainly not as many as you'd find in bread or pasta or bananas. Especially since I usually split a can/bottle with my sweetie. And I posted in my food journal, dark beers are very high in antioxidants, which are even more readily available than the ones in red wine. Plus wine always makes me sick and gives me headaches and leaves my mouth really dry. But a few ounces of dark beer on a Saturday night just makes me feel good! (Usually - anyway!! This last Saturday was an exception....maybe I'm losing my tolerance for alcohol!)  :(

I too drink occasionally.  Maybe two Michelob Ultras on a weekend (2.6 carbs ea), or I may have a glass of wine on rare occasion.  I've given up an awful lot of things, so I'm not going to stress over an occasional drink.

That sucks for me, I normally drink Bacardi. Haven't touched it since I turned paleo but I plan to add it as a regular cheat in the future (1-2 shots a week).
Right Now.

Avoid the Coke, use Bacardi Gold and you are good to go.

I find that if I am low carb it takes less alcohol to give me a buzz than before going low carb.
Not a problem if drinking at home but be careful if you are out.  There is an Oktoberfest coming up soon and with every good Oktoberfest there is a German beer garden. :D

Has anyone noticed the relationship between fitness levels & the amount onf one can drink? I've noticed the same since going paleo... was thinking that was it!

Definitely, with the paleo diet it leads to the conclusion drinking alcohol in excessive amounts is bad, therefore less consumption on a regularly basis requires less consumption to become intoxicated on whatever occasion it may be.

I try to strip alcohol from my diet completely though, everybody my age is a club rat and all they do on the weekend is get absolutely trashed and have massive hangovers and bags over their eyes. That surely is not doing anything good for the body.

I enjoy drinking to socialize, not drinking to get drunk - I also have the unfortunate habit to smoke when drinking heaps (I usually bum puff or just hold it in my hand until it goes out) lame I know. But then the next day I regret it, I am never one to pick up a smoke and become addicted - as I used to smoke a pack on the weekend with no trouble, then had severe chest infections and coughed up blood after a year of this lol.

If you are in ketoisis (from low-carb) then you get drunk quicker.

Quote
Will drinking alcohol affect ketosis?

No and yes. The liver can make ketones out of alcohol, so technically, when you drink you'll continue to produce ketones and so will remain in ketosis. The problem is ... alcohol converts more easily to ketones than fatty acids, so your liver will use the alchol first, in preference to fat. Thus, when you drink, basically your FAT burning is put on hold until all the alcohol is out of your system.

This rapid breakdown of alcohol into ketones and acetaldehyde (the intoxicating by-product) ... tends to put low carbers at risk for quicker intoxication ... especially if no other food is consumed to slow absorption.

The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.
