Anyone had any luck with weight gain supplements>
« on: October 19, 2010, 06:35:42 AM »
I know.. they're not Paleo... But I want to bulk up and the scale isn't moving.

I thought about supplementing with some kind of weight gain powder similar to this one.

http://www.allstarhealth.com/f/naturade-weight_gain_sugar_free.htm  I would mix it with almond milk (since dairy makes me sick).

I tend to rely on how things "feel" in my body more than whether it's "Paleo" or not.  I've had the best luck so far following a strict Paleo Diet but I'm not opposed to supplementing if it will help me get the results I want.

For example, I recently added some L-Glutamine to my diet to help with recovery.  I've noticed I recover alot quicker, have more energy, and it doesn't make me tired (huge selling point).  Yet, protein powders have always made me feel sick in my stomach and made my head feel "fuzzy."  Perhaps this is because of all the artificial ingredients?

Has anyone tried any weight-gain supps with luck?  If so, how did it affect your physical or mental energy?

Why do you want to get fat?

This miraculous method to weight gain is very simple. And it can be yours for the low cost of $39.99. It's called "EatMoreYouSkinnyBastard(tm)". My proprietary formula will have you stronger, more defined with more muscle mass than ever before.

Act now and I'll throw in my bonus product, EatMoreYouSkinnyBastard EXTREME(tm).

Ok - If you aren't eating at least 2lbs of meat a day, half a dozen eggs, and gobs of veggies already - don't bother with weight gainer supplements. They are poor-quality protein and varying sugars from varied sources, none of which are healthy. Most of the protein in the supplements has been irradiated for long shelf life, which destroys enzymes that would normally help your digestion... not to mention derived from byproduct of unhealthy cows hooked to feed troughs and milking machines. It's bad for you, it's bad for the animals, and it's bad for the environment.

I have known hundreds of people that were trying to "bulk up" and none of them were eating enough. The guys I've helped, gained the muscle they needed to, without getting fat, or using weight gainer.

Diets fail because society as a whole believes body image is more important than health. The problem is that obesity is simply one of many symptoms of an illness, not the illness itself.

And I'm being cured.

Brandon, Why don't you try a Paleo version of SAD? High carb, moderate protein and low fat.

Not a bad idea.  Other than fruit, what else can I add for carbs?

Sweet potatoes are not paleo.  If you're going to add sweet potatoes, you might as well add white rice.

And yet they are prescribed by Cordain and Wolf for athletes as paleo-friendly.

And yet they are prescribed by Cordain and Wolf for athletes as paleo-friendly.

Wolf also prescribes completely modern and artificial supplements, and Cordain's "Paleo for Atheletes" recommends sports drinks, which are nearly as artificial.

I eat two bananas and half a dozen eggs pre-workout, and usually a some dried figs and nuts post-workout. Plantains can be baked and served savory, and they have a very high starch content (as well as plenty of potassium and other nutrients). Rutabagas, veggies, etc...
