eating animal organs instead supplements?
« on: December 13, 2010, 04:43:27 AM »
Hi,
I've recently read that some meat organs e.g. hearts contains lot's of
goodies like phosphatidylserine, vitamin A, several B vitamins, iron, folic acid, copper and CoQ10.
Do you know any contra indication for eating a lot of meat organs? I usually was giving them to my cat :)
They're much cheaper then supplements I usually buy so I think it is worthy to switch.  8)

Heart is basically just very dark meat muscle.

Organs from healthy organs should generally be fine, though livers and kidneys from animals that have had to filter out lots of poisons in their lifetimes may not be as good for you.

You shouldn't need any supplements, except possibly vitamin D, on a paleo diet.

Ditto on the toxic organs. Never, ever eat organs that come from commercially processed animals. Just as the meat isn't great for you (compared to grass-fed), the organs store a lot more of the antibiotics and hormones that the animals are injected with. Try to buy organic at the very least. Non-organic liver is probably the worst organ you could eat. EVERYTHING passes through the liver.

Also, I like to input my daily food intake at nutritiondata.com. It allows me to see how much vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, etc that I've gotten that day. Just eating Paleo, I get 100%+ of my daily requirements (often much more in the case of Vitamin A...around 300%/day on average!). I supplement with calcium + Vitamin D every day, and that's pretty much it.

Just by what I had for lunch-- 2 roasted chicken thighs, diced beets, mixed rocket/baby spinach salad, and a cup of blueberries, and my full-fat yogurt & flaxseed for breakfast--I can see what I need to bump up (like my Vitamin E, K & Iron for instance) when I plan dinner.

Maybe thats why I can't eat liver. Every time I've tried it, it has been from the supermarket and just tasted wrong. My dog wouldn't eat it either, which can't be good.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

I eat raw liver, raw oysters, raw clams, raw heart, raw fish heads, raw bone marrow, etc.

I'm very picky with organs.  I will only buy it if it is fresh, clean, tastes great, organic.

A lot of dogs don't like liver at first, but if he usually eats everything and still won't touch it, that's probably a sign.

I've been wanting to try some organs from "clean" sources...I got some liver for my dog from a place that buys from local farms, and it actually smelled ok when I was making liver treats.  Normally the smell of it cooking makes me gag.

liver actually taste very good to me although of course the source have to be known.
Don't you think organs from market store are safer anyway because they have strict rules for testing it?

If you mean supermarkets, the ones in my area carry mostly factory farmed meats.  I'm having a heck of a time finding anything that isn't at least grain finished, which means a bad omega 3-6 ratio.  It's probably safe as far as not catching a disease from it, but it's not the healthiest option.

I'll get some from a grassfed organic steer when I'm on the farm and see how that goes down. It really does taste so wrong to me though, and it has been my experience that once you've been Paleo for awhile, you can start to trust things like that again.

Liver is probably the most nutrient dense food so its definitely good to include it once in awhile.  According to ray peat it has anti metabolic properties though and is best only done once in awhile.  On the other hand there is anecdotes that native Americans only ate organs and fed the rest to the dogs.

I eat

bone marrow from wild grass fed cows.  Super yum!
liver - chicken, duck, cow
oxtail
kidneys in their suet if possible

I have eaten
heart.  I have a recipe for stuffed lambs hearts, if you want it
sweetbreads. Quite nice but not that great nutritionally.
tongue

I haven't tried
brains
tripe
testicles

The key with offal is
a) as fresh as possible and
b) from a healthy, organically reared, pastured animal

I like offal, but it has to be absolutely fresh and it has to be prepared right. One of the big downsides with most types of offal is that the prep time is longer, cutting off the membranes, greebly bits etc, but the nutrient levels are higher so it's worth it.

If you don't like liver, it may be because of how it was prepared. Cut into huge slabs and then cooked until grey it is disgusting! My recipe: make sure it is organic and absolutely fresh, and then cook it that day. Remove the membranes from the outside. (Once you can gently wriggle your fingers underneath they lift reasonably easily.) Then cut thin slices from the outside, and stop when you get to the tubey greebly bit in the middle. (The rest can be fed to the cat or dog or boiled and chopped and fed to the chooks or whatever.) Season with sea salt and fresh sage, and fry the slices in dripping for only a minute or two so they're still pink in the middle. Yum! For extra yum, deglaze the pan with a splash of sherry and pour the juices over.

Kidneys are great in a mustardy sauce. Hearts take time to prepare, cutting off the tubey bits and connective tissue, but they're good in any kind of hearty casserole.   :D  Sweetbreads are delicious. Lungs are fine ground up in homemade sausage meat.

I haven't been game to try brains, tripe or testicles either.   :-\

I would eat cows brains from my beef supplier but it is illegal in the UK.  You can buy pigs heads at the food market without too much trouble, but the only place I've seen lambs brains is in the bangla supermarket.  I wouldn't eat it because I don't know the origin, plus it's halal which I don't agree with either...

Jean - you are right on with your liver prep recommendation
