Good omega 3 supplement?
« on: July 28, 2009, 03:54:30 AM »
Hey up folks, im currently in the process of trying to source a good omega 3 supplement, to counteract the high omega6 PUFAs ide say im getting lately as a result of my high nut consumption.. I think i got through a kg of nuts over the weekend :o

After some research, I was dead set on getting this Salmon oil based on a recommendation, but then discovered Krill oil is supposedly alot better than fish oil for its high antioxident levels, longer shelf life, and better absorption. So im currently looking at this.

Has anyone any other suggestions, anything else I should be looking at?

Can you cut back on the nuts? I've pretty much cut them (and seeds) out of my diet since they have such high omega-6's and don't agree with me that well anyway.

I don't take supplements, but good food sources of omega 3's are: coldwater fish, pastured eggs, pastured pork, and grassfed beef.

Without nuts and seeds, and eating good sources of omega 3's, I can keep my omega 6:3 ratio below 4:1 very easily.

Yeah its probably the only way to go about it really isnt it?! Only problem is though I have an obsession with them, its getting out of hand. Any other suggestions for high fat sources then? Im afraid if I cut back on nuts ill start to lose too much weight... I could try downing loads of lard, but its hard enough to come by where i am. Ill chuck in more avocados and coconut meat anyways I think, and organic fatty meats when I can get them.

Haha, yes, it's easy to eat a lot of nuts, huh? :D

Do you have a farmers market? You could ask your local pork farmers if they have lard. Or if you have beef farmers, you could ask for tallow (which is even more awesome omega-wise than lard!). Or they may be able to give you suet, which you can easily render into tallow.

I cook everything in a spoonful or two of lard and it's been really great. I even melt it and use it as a salad dressing with a splash of lemon or lime juice (MMM!). I definitely recommend it if you can find it!

You can buy pastured beef tallow online here:

They have a $75 minimum, so you'd want to shop around their site for some other stuff too. I'm very eager to try their pemmican, it might be a great snack for you, since it's high fat!

With respect to the nuts, you could try to make sure a substantial proportion are walnuts, because they have a better omega 3:6 ratio.

You could also try unroasted nuts, as they won't have the added omega 6 from peanut oil.

Maybe try adding more walnuts to your diet.  They are a good Omega 3 source.

Walnuts are still really high in Omega 6s.

1 oz of walnuts has 9,260mg of omega 6s!

Here's a comment on another site:

Walnuts are highly PUFA with O-6: O-3 ratios of 10:1 or more and once again, ALA is not efficiently converted to the EPA and DHA we need.

There are no seeds or nuts that actually improve your ratios only fish or cod liver oil can do that (besides reducing 6s)

The sources I can find say walnuts have 2600 mg of omega-3 per ounce, which would give them an omega 3:6 ratio of 1:4.  One source:

http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&q=cache%3A6Yj5S4kNYVkJ%3Amultimindgroup.us%2Fce_modules%2FWAL06.pdf+%22omega+3%22+ratio+walnut&hl=en&gl=us

That's still not as good as wild fish or grass fed beef, though.

Yeah I plugged the numbers into the cronometer last night and found walnuts have an impressive ratio of 4.15:1 in favor of omega 6s, not bad. Also, macadamia nuts are good too, 6.5:1 in favor of omega 6s. But whats great about macadamias is they only have 1.3% omega6, they're mostly monounsaturate.

I've also come to the conclusion that I can add hazelnuts even though they have a terrible ratio of 78.5:1, as they are only 7.8% omega 6. So adding a few hazelnuts won't increase my overall ratio too much as long as walnuts are the majority of my intake. All according to the cron-o-meter of course.  :)

But going back to my original idea of balancing my ratios by guzzling down loads of fish oil, well I think thats just out of the Q. I'd regularly eat in excess of 200g of nuts in a day, so imagine the amount of fish oil id need to balance that!! No thanks.

I got my info on walnuts from Nutritiondata.com:
1 oz. walnuts:
Quote

Total Omega-3 fatty acids 562mg
 Total Omega-6 fatty acids 9260mg

That's a 16.5:1 ratio. I'm not sure where that book got that figure (2.5g) for omega 3s. But it appears that the Cron-o-meter has the same data as the book does. ???

ETA: OK OK wait I got it! - there's two different kinds of walnuts and their data is completely different! Black walnuts are the ones I listed, and English walnuts are the ones you are listing. Interesting that they are so different in omega 3s and 6s!!! So the English ones have a better ratio (more 3s), but they are even higher in 6s: 10g per oz!!

1 oz. hazelnuts:
Quote

Total Omega-3 fatty acids 24.6mg
Total Omega-6 fatty acids 2213mg
That's a 90:1 ratio; although the 6s are lower than in walnuts.

1 oz. macadamias:
Quote

Total Omega-3 fatty acids 58.2mg
Total Omega-6 fatty acids 366mg

Ratio: 6:1, quite low in 6s. This sounds like the best choice as far as nuts go.

Shell_piece, I think that it's a good decision to try to just cut back on the nuts instead of chugging fish oil!! :D

Has anyone here considered hemp oil? I get this from whole foods in my area, it has a perfect 3:1 ratio of omega 6 and omega 3. I use a couple of teaspoons a day. I like the flavor on my eggs in the morning.
