Muscle spasms/cramps: Nutritional causes & therapies
« on: September 27, 2010, 09:35:30 AM »
I'd been trying to find more information about relieving menstrual cramps, and a friend in Sydney highly recommended dosing up on magnesium during those few days (more than usual, around 1000mg/day). Guess what--it worked for both my lower back and abdominal cramps! I stumbled across this very informative article about the roles that both Calcium & Magnesium have on the body, how they work in conjunction and how overdosing or deficiency can lead to certain symptoms. There are also a couple dozen more articles at the bottom of the page, ranging from Vitamin C to Potassium & Zinc.

Make sure you find a magnesium supplement that doesn't contain calcium... basically calcium binds with magnesium and also leeches magnesium from your body to be properly assimilated. Taking magnesium separate from calcium (and calcium rich foods) will keep your levels of magnesium up instead of leeched up by your dietary calcium.

Also, if they come back despite the magnesium, the amino acid Taurine worked wonders for me when I used to get cramps really bad. Don't ask where I found out this, I think it was suggested to me when I had some severe cramps during a summer strongman season and had knotted calves every night. Honestly though, eating tons of meat will give most people the amount of taurine needed.
Diets fail because society as a whole believes body image is more important than health. The problem is that obesity is simply one of many symptoms of an illness, not the illness itself.

And I'm being cured.

Thanks.  I have been cramp free for a while but have not changed much.
