Probiotic yogurt
« on: December 20, 2007, 05:23:48 PM »
I wanted to share this with you guys, since I'm sure some of you have had digestive issues.

I'm going to be starting a probiotic yogurt that I will make myself. It's pretty cool, and it's really good for you. It's fermented for 24 hours instead of the usual 6-8 and it's started with a specific range of bacterias. Steer clear of bifidus strains, because they can make digestive problems worse.

It's WAY stronger than any probiotic available. You start with 1/8 tsp and work yourself up to 1-2 cups a day. Each cup has like 700 billion probiotic thingies in it so that's why you have to start with a small amount. The yogurt protects the bacteria so they can go further along into your digestive tract than probiotics you take in capsule form.

So if you want to check it out, I'm providing a link. You can use a yogurt maker if you futz with it; usually they heat the yogurt too hot or they overheat and shut off before the 24 hours is up. There's alternate instructions with a heating pad and that's what I'm going to use. I ordered the Progurt starter that is recommended from GI Pro Health. It's in my fridge now. :) You can use the starter with goat or cow milk. The really long fermentation denatures the proteins in the milk very well, so even people who can't tolerate dairy can usually tolerate this yogurt.

Hope you found this at least somewhat interesting. :)

I've heard of people making yogurt with coconut milk.  Do you think that would work?

From what I've heard, nobody has been able to successfully make yogurt with coconut milk. I couldn't tell you why.

I did learn that you can use nut milks, though. SCD restrictions means you have to make it yourself, which is not hard.

I tried kefir for some time but it didn't please me, either it was too sour, when using skimmed milk, or to fatty, with whole milk.
Besides milk protein is quite insulinotropic. So everything in the milk is bad, the fat, too much saturated fat, the sugar, and even the protein...

Wow, it would be great if you didn't paint everyone and everything with such broad generalizations.

The probiotic yogurt that I make myself has completely denatured goat casein, because it is fermented for 24 hours. This effectively digests all of the lactose, so it contains almost no sugars. Each cup of it also contains about 700 billion probiotic thingies (a technical term LOL). Milk fat is not evil, either, but I don't have time to pick apart your entire statement just now.

The yogurt is described on the Pecanbread.com web site as the diet is being used there to treat autistic kids. I'm using it to treat my own autoimmune disease. The diet in its original form was used to treat Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and it's still used for that now.

Unless its skimmed it has mostly saturated fat, and the skimmed one is very sour fermented, this is just my experience and my opinion.
Cow milk is the perfect beverage if you are a calf and have to gain weight quickly.

I'd just rather you quantify it by saying it was your opinion from the start.

hay ive tried making yogurt with coconut milk, but it turned pinkish in color and i was to afraid to eat it  :'(  Think maybe I'm being to wussy  or do i have good reason to not eat pink coconut yogurt? I have a theory That the bacteria may be making vitamin b-12, as b-12 is naturally pink or red in color. Perhaps?

I think I might be too wussy to eat pink yogurt too.   :o

I read on a different forum about people making yogurt with coconut milk.  I think they all said it kind of separates and doesn't set up as nicely as milk does, but if you're using it in a smoothie then it doesn't matter.

Speak of the devil.  One of the blogs on my google reader had an article today about coconut milk yogurt.
