Selenium
« on: February 01, 2007, 12:34:44 AM »
Based on the advice I read in Cordain, I have just started taking 100 micrograms of selenium each day.  Normally I don't bother with vitamins/minerals, but it is a well known fact that NZ soils are deficient in selenium, so any veg grown here doesn't have as much as it should.  Does any one else take it?  According to the bottle I got, the maximun dose is 150 micrograms per day, but Cordain recommends 200-400.  Is that safe?  Suze

I'm not sure on the dosing, but I think that Brazil nuts are very high in selenium.  I guess you'd have to get imported nuts though.  :/

to me i can't see any circumstances by where somebody would benefit in anyway from taking a selenium supplement...not even to save time.

if you look at somewhere like nutrition data you'll see that all you need to do is consume a couple of brazils a day to get more than enough of this important anti-oxidant mineral.

my advice would be to soak the brazils over-night to aid digestibility - theyre surely cheaper than the synthetic pills too?

+ they taste ok - and give you other natural minerals to boot

You can also get selenium in your diet by eating crab or lobster.

Does Cordain advises selenium supplements?. This diet is rich in food that contain this mineral such as nuts, meat, fish and eggs.

On page 133 of my paperback copy of The Paleo Diet, Cordain recommends a selenium supplement of 200-400 micrograms a day.
