Vitamins - what are they good for? Absolutely nothin
« on: August 21, 2006, 04:20:43 PM »
I think anything we need can and should be obtained from real food sources

e.g.

Vitamin A supplements.  Who needs em.  Eat liver or organ meat.  The pill-popping fad is still going strong but try to resist it.

Anyone here have strong opinions for/against supplements?

I already take enough pills for my Crohn's Disease, I don't intend upping the quota.
The reason I am here is to hopefully replace my pills with food, (real food).

I don't think there's enough real food to support 6 B people of this planet. IMO, supplements have a place especially when soil composition may be poor in essential minerals and fruits nowaday are much sweeter than during stone-age.
I also believe in large dose of vit C daily (which is hard to get through food alone). I take a varying sub-set of 16-20 supplements available in my cupboard most days.

You are correct, there is no way the earth could support it's current population on a hunter-gatherer economy. However there is probably enough to support a small group of right thinking people such as ourselves. And given enough time, we could pass on our lifestyle and genes to our offspring, eventually creating an evolutionary throwback to the paleolithic era, lean, mean, hunting machines that will one day rule the world........ oh.... sorry got carried away there. :)

I'll see how I go on just food for now, if I find I am not getting enough vitamins I may use supplements if I can't solve it by a adjusting the diet.

gotta go and kill a carrot, better get my big spear, they put up quite a struggle sometimes. :)

You are right

Earth is not made to support 6 billion people

But that doesn't mean we should destroy ourselves so people can keep popping out babies

If you can afford to do so you should be eating animals, vegetables, fruits, and nuts and not much else

No need to bring people down to the standard human level which these days involves fast food meals, a 40 inch waist, a container of pills per day, and a chronic disease or two for good measure

I realize this argument can get religious/political in nature when we start talking about why are we here, our purpose, etc.

There is a LOT of space out there though which some people forget.  Some estimate about everyone could get 5 acres and fit inside Texas sticks out in my head...

What about a supplement like cod liver oil?  I think that might have some kind of place in a modern paleodiet (oh the oxymorons).

Especially because I don't like liver, but suspect I need a lot of vitamin A.    :'(

You'd be surprised how edible liver can be

Stuff it into a chicken and combining it with enough other foods is the way to go

I suggest giving it another try after you find a good recipe

Though strongly believe in the instinctive eating method of paleolithic it doesn't take a genius to realize it's impossible to implement for the mass.
While the world is feeding on rice, wheat and soybean an old species is re-born - the neo-caveman.
Jared Diamond pointed out the worst mistake man ever made was to adapt agricultural practice 10K yrs ago.

Those of us who can implement it and have the intellect to realize why it makes sense should be implementing it in our own lives and encourage family and friends to do the same

We can't solve all the world's problems in one fell swoop but I think you'll find that a caveman lifestyle is a damn good start

I take a standard multivitamin each day, mostly just as an "insurance policy".  What's the harm in that, other that spending $0.03/day?

I also take a Glucosamine/Chondroiitin formula and have noticed significantly reduced pain in my knees.  I recognize that the improvement may be due to the exercises I've been doing, but again, at a minimal cost (approx $0.30/day) I feel it's worth it.

Lastly, I take a fish oil capsule 3 times/day.

I think people should take vitamins. The bottom line is that people don't eat nearly enough food to probably cover every single vitamin & mineral they need. This is not to mention the low quality of much food available today. Not to mention organ meat, I find, is just unappealing.

I say people taking vitamins is absolutely fine if it's a high quality vitamin - as naturally some will add synthetic vitamins (Vitamin E for example I believe is added in a synthetic form) that will not match up to the real thing. However, of course they shouldn't substitute this for real food either, but it doesn't hurt you either.

in a perfect world i agree all nutrition should be coming from real food.  however..........
i have been eating caveman for over a year now.  cheating on ocasion but not much and less and less.   i do still take a few supplements.  i take i tablespoon worth of fish oil everyday. this really seems to help my shoulder joints as i let it run out for awhile and i ached alot after lifting  for a period of time without it.  i started taking it again and the pain vanished.   i also take a mutliple vitamin and a vitamin combo of magnes, potas, and calcium that is made from real food.  being 57 i also take a coq10 twice a day.  this is what i do and am not saying every one should but on the other hand it seems to be working for me and i am not really going to argue with anyone about it.  just thought i would answer the initial question.

yak rider, i agree with you. Plants today aren't what they used to be (people tend to like more sugar and less fiber in them so over the last 10k years...), neighter are feedlot cattle as nutritious as wild animals (of course try to get some grass fed etc.). I think you should eat as nutritious food as possible and supplement if necessary (medical conditions etc.). I also take fish oil as fish is quite expensive here (Finland) and vitamin D during winter months. I've also heard of veggie powder of some kind (I think it was greens+) but haven't found it anywhere. It would be a nice addition to workout drink for some extra nutrients.
