biovaan

my wife and i do drink barley green every morning.  it is very nutritious but the taste is not so good.  some people love it but after 6 years of drinking it i still get the shivers after drinking.   fortunately one only drinks 4 oz of it.  it is made for kep and some other seaweeds.  lol   ours comes from a company called  AIM   which seems to produce very high quality stuff.  i also have had a green vegatable life powder but forget the exact name and company presently.  it too has the "healthy" taste.    funny after all these years i just don't consider the barley green a supplement, more just another type of food, like a morning juice or something.

"Didn't women invent agriculture? ............ Duck/Hide/Cower."

Yes. It is widely believed that women were the first to plant/harvest seeds from when they gathered plant materials. I personally feel that civilized women are evil and have suckered men into this crappy way of life.

It would make sense if you look at it from the perspective that in GH societies, there is a division of labor between the sexes but it's mutually beneficial and there is no "sexism". But once you get to civilization, you have all these angry men hating women, and stories like "Adam and Eve". Notice how after Eve did something wrong, man was CURSED to till the soil? I think women suckered us into civilization and agriculture. Boo@Women. :( Or I could be completely wrong and am about to make all the women here very angry. :P

The last time I checked, I haven't coerced any men into agriculture.

Me either.  And I doubt very seriously that women would have been in favor of all the paternalistic bullsh*t that came along with agriculture.  Early HG societies were earth-mother based and much more egalitarian.  So there. Suze

Of course you haven't Kallyn. The Neolothic revolution was hundreds of generations before you were even born.

Suze. True, patriarchy is men in charge. But, there's an old addage... behind every great man is a great woman, right? :P

I'm thinking about throwing out my vitamins... thoughts??? I eat pretty well rounded... If I am eating a lot of meat, fruit, nuts and lots of greens... what do I have to worry about? I plan on doing a survival thing for a year out in the woods... and also hiking to south america...

so I think I should get used to it now no?

I think anything we need can and should be obtained from real food sources

Anyone here have strong opinions for/against supplements?

Absolutely! When I discovered the Natrol Cinnamon Extract I was taking for my blood sugar contains three or four hidden sugars, not to mention several other harmful chemicals, I checked all the twenty or so supplements I had been taking and found them all full of toxins, sugars and salts! That was when I decided that I will never use supplements again. That was two or three weeks ago and I feel no worse for the lack of them.

Besides, how did I manage to be healthy throughout my entire childhood and early adulthood without supplements? Simple, like my ancestors, I got what I needed from the foods I ate.

I'm through with supplements forever. They are not only mostly expelled from the body as waste, they also contain dangerous substances that make it absolute lunacy to take them, thinking you're going to protect your health!

Like all the other dietary myths concocted to separate us from our money, the unregulated supplements industry's hype that we need their products is among the worst.

About Omega 3 it seems its better taking it from the fish itself rather than from cod liver oil.
"Research indicates that omega-3s may be better absorbed from food than supplements. Norwegian researchers compared 71 volunteers' absorption of omega-3s (EPA and DHA) from salmon, smoked salmon, cod (14 ounces of fish per week) or cod liver oil (3 teaspoons per day). Cooked salmon provided 1.2 grams of omega-3s daily, while cod liver oil provided more than twice as much: 3 grams of omega-3s per day.

Despite the fact that the salmon group got less than half the amount of omega-3s as the cod liver oil group, blood levels of omega-3s increased quite a bit more in those eating salmon than those taking cod liver oil. After 8 weeks, EPA levels had risen 129% and DHA rose 45% in those eating cooked salmon compared to 106% and 25%, respectively, in those taking cod liver oil.

In the group eating smoked salmon, blood levels of omega-3s rose about one-third less than in the salmon group. In those eating cod, the rise in omega-3s was very small.

Concurrent with the rise in omega-3s in those eating salmon, a drop was seen in blood levels of a number of pro-inflammatory chemicals (TNFalpha, IL-8, leukotriene B4, and thromboxane B2). Researchers think omega-3s may be better absorbed from fish because fish contains these fats in the form of triglycerides, while the omega-3s in almost all refined fish oils are in the ethyl ester form. Once absorbed, omega-3s are converted by the body from their triglyceride to ester forms as needed. Lipids. 2006 Dec;41(12):1109-14."

Although in this site it is advised to get the omega 3 from fish oils ...
"Increase the omega 3 by taking fish oil. Unfortunately, the oceans are contaminated and the fish you buy has dangerous levels of mercury, a poisonous metal. Fish oils have passed production steps that eliminate many contaminants, you ingest much less pollutants that with fish.
Besides, when you fry fish you destroy most of the omega 3 available and form lots of Trans Fats. Very unhealthy for your heart. You would have to eat it uncooked in order to get the omega 3."

They say that frying destroys it, but is it the same grilling or roasting it?....In the first site they refer to cooked salmon as the best source...
Personally I prefer taking it through fish: salmon, sardines, tuna, trout, cod, squid, cuttlefish...

About multivitamins there is controversy about their goodness

The real question is to find out if to much of some vitamins or minerals might be dangerous or not.

I checked my diet using the pantry option of http://www.nutritiondata.com/ and I realized I had some deficiencies as selenium and vitamin k but I try to get the amount I need through diet, just searching for the food rich in this nutrients.

About vitamin C I think is not hard to get the necessary dose through fruits and vegetables, actually I take about 3 times the daily dose recommended.
