I take ddrops (1000IU) if it is an overcast day, or in the Winter time, but don't bother if I have been out in the sun for more than about 10 minutes.
I am still taking prenatal/maternal supplements as I am breastfeeding two. And fish oil because I have not found cod liver oil yet, nor can I afford grass fed beef at this point.
I have always had troubles keeping my calcium levels up, I have gotten several cavities since my first pregnancy, and even with the increased amounts of greens I still wasn't making it. So I have added kefir and goat milk cheese back into my diet to add some calcium and potassium, which I have also been chronically lacking. I still cannot stand the texture of avocado, and nothing else seems to get me anywhere near the 4700 mg that I keep seeing. I don't understand why it is so high, but that is my stumbling block in demonstrating a self sufficient diet.

The standard recommendation for calcium is based on the standard diet, which is highly acid forming.  Dairy and grains are particular culprits.  Calcium is used by the body to buffer pH, so an acid forming diet creates more need for calcium.

I still take nothing!  I don't feel that I need those things.  I feel better without them.

I know we should be able to get all of our nutrients from the food we eat since our ancestors did, but isn't food today grown on nutrient depleted soil?  And the animals are grazing on nutrient depleted plants grown in nutrient depleted soil.  I feel like you just can't get everything you need for optimal health without taking some sort of supplement. Right now till I figure out which ones I need most, I've been trying different superfood and whole food supplements.

That depends a lot on the type of meat/fruit/veg you are buying.

Organic and/or grass-fed foods are much better for you in both nutrition and how it affects the soil. The natural, varied diet is good for the animal's health and well-being, and their excrement returns nutrients to the soil.

Factory farming with grains nearly always ruins soil from having too many animals in a confined space and the soil used to grow the grains for them to eat. Once the grain is farmed, the soil is devoid of nutrients, which is where artificial fertilisers come in and do their job. :-\

If you can afford organic/grass-fed food, a lot of supplementation can be ignored. The only supplement you might need is Vitamin D, depending on the lifestyle you lead.

Hey GS,

I take Vitamin D3, 10,000 IU, made by Healthy Origins. I take it everyday unless I get a full day's worth of sunlight. Link.

Ingredients for the above are: Pure Olive Oil (fruit), Gelatin, Glycerin and Purified Water.

Haven't ever taken cod liver oil, hopefully someone else can chime in. The iHerb website is pretty good for supplements.

I've just started taking cod liver oil last week because of everything I've read on it.  But it hasn't been long enough to really see any benefits. There is a lot of info available at http://www.westonaprice.org/cod-liver-oil

I have been on Paleo since July 9th of this year.  I started a new schedule (i.e. EARLY mornings, like 5am) in August and have been feeling very exhausted.  I didn't feel like doing anything.  I didn't even want to walk outside to play with my kids.  Pushing them on the swing was too much for me.  I recently started taking Vitamin D3 1000 i.u. and 300 mg of Omega-3 and have seen an amazing difference.  I don't have to struggle to keep my eyeballs open any more.  I also take a pro-biotic and a multivitamin, but I've taken those items for quite some time.  Anyway, my point is, for me, I need the supplimentation :)

I notice not many people are taking pro-biotics. Acidopholus etc.  I find I can't live without them - my tummy is much happier with the good bacteria in there!  :D  Also take a multi, as am breastfeeding.  Take mag phos for muscles and eczema.  Can't seem to stomach fish oil - it repeats on me ALL day - any advice re this??

If fish oil doesn't work for you, you can always get your omega 3s from fatty fish, pastured or organic omega 3 eggs, or grass finished beef.

From the research I have done on the web it seems like everyone needs a Vit D supplement, so I take 5000IU a day of that.  Also a multivitamin to keep the bases covered.

I had the same issue with fish oil. I changed brands to a higher quality and keep refrigerated. Haven't had a problem since. Give that a try mum. Best of luck !
