Fun and Games
« on: October 09, 2009, 09:22:22 PM »
So I got a Wii Fit and this week I have begun to really use it.

Video games have finally gotten cool. They are inventing ones that encourage physical activity. So instead of hitting buttons to punch out the bad guy, you are actually throwing punches.

The Wii Fit SEEMS harmless, but not for me. I was sore for two days after playing "rhythmic boxing." Right now I am only doing the Balance and Aerobic games. I'm going to include the yoga and body-weight training for when I've lost some weight, so I don't fall over and hurt myself.

I'm sure the Wii Fit is responsible for the uptick in weight loss I have been experiencing. I do a body test every day (it wants me to). I started on Wednesday at 171.1lbs. On Thursday I lost 1.6 pounds and today I was down another .4 pounds. I am at 169.1 now. Before this week, I have been sort of flat for the last two weeks.

Way back when I started on the diet in Early September I got myself down to 168 (9 pounds in two weeks). Then I fell off the wagon for a week and gained 5 pounds back. As of this past week I have lost a total of two pounds.

Saturday morning I did a 13 minute "Island Lap" (jogging in place) along with other balance and aerobic activities that add up to 30 minutes of exercise.

Sunday and Today I was very sore from Saturday's workout. I did some lighter stuff  (step aerobics and rhythm boxing) and then did yard work. I swept my kitchen and front porch and walkway. Out back a reseeded the grass in pasture forage and covered it with garden soil. I had to carry the 2 bags of 1.5cuft material I one bag at a time to the back. Sunday night I was still pretty sore.

Today, I'm not so sore but a little wiped out. I did a body test and my weight went up to 169.1 (from 168.9). There could be many reasons for that so I'm not going to worry. I'll run some errands that'll be my physical work for the day.

I usually exercise after getting up in the morning before breakfast. I'm wondering if this is the best time to be doing this. It is the most convenient, it's that hour between taking my thyroid meds and when I can eat, and I weigh the least this time a day. And evolutionarily speaking wouldn't physical exercise come before a meal?

I read somewhere that Sumo wrestlers also exercise on an empty stomach and then gorge themselves on food afterward. This, I read, is so they don't lose any weight. I wonder if my exercises could be made more efficient by waiting after breakfast to work out. I could always body test myself before and then come back later.

Your thoughts, Wlfdg, anyone?

It's best to wait 2 to 3 hours after a full breakfast before you exercise (if you don't want it to come back up!).  If you feel you need something, try a low fiber fruit.

I'm an early morning exerciser and personally I do better with nothing or just a small fruit for anything less than a 90 min workout (just coffee and some water).  I've tried different combinations of fruit, nuts, and/or egg, but I simply prefer to wait and eat after.  And I eat like a horse after.. so I guess I'm like those sumo wrestlers!

If sumo wrestlers ate and then trained they would lose by projectile vomiting. Their training sessions are beyond intense and their meals are even more so.

There is research that states that exercise before b-fast can increase BMR by 3% for every 15min. of exercise. There is also research that says it makes no difference. I find I can train harder if top off my amino acid and glycogen stores before a.m. training. I usually have water, coffee, 1 egg and a banana or 1/4 of a cantaloupe.

I really believe it is personal preference.

I was thinking from an evolutionary standpoint my body would not burn as much fat if it is exercising while hungry, but I realize that we don't just lose fat when we exercise.

Even so, I think I will wait until after breakfast because before I seem to not have all that much energy and be in lower spirits.

Since I seem to be stuck at 168.9, I think it's time to take things to the next level...so to speak. I am going to start using the Yoga and body weight strength training parts of Wii as well. This is no place for reluctance.

Cool on taking it to the next level ;D…strength exercise is addicting!  I’m personally not a yoga person but I’ve done a little in the past and man oh man, I don’t think I ever sweat so much with so little movement in all my life, lol! :o
I haven’t used my wiifit in awhile…hopefully it will still be speaking to me the next time I do!  I just got a new game to try out, ghost squad I think it’s called…not exercise, just a point and shoot but I like those too :D

I only have one other game, Indiana Jones, oh and the Wii Sports, which comes with the game. I'd like to get Tomb Raider, but the Wii Version is hard to find.

I have ignored the Wii for the past few days, instead trying my hand at burpees.

Yeah it doesn't look like much. Put on a 30lb weighted vest and try one!  :D  That's what it's like for me.

I'm really a wimp when it comes to real exertion. This seems to be a general theme in my life, so I think I'll keep plucking at this until I can push myself. This is one of those things that can be found nowhere else but within me.

5 burpees yesterday
10 today

Burpees are tough no matter who you are. Just keep pluggin' away. Just keep trying to do at least 1 additional repetition every time. You'll get there.

Went hiking with my permaculture group at a resort ranch. Climbing up and down hills for four hours. Crossing streams on rocks. Only fell once. Everyone was really chatty. I hung to the back, staying in the moment, drinking in the smells, the sights, the sensations on my skin, and most palpably, the profound silence around our group that I don't get in the city. They were probably thinking, poor fat girl can't keep up...pity. But I didn't get out of breath, not until the very end when we climbed out of the canyon.

It was a good day.
