Iceman's journal
« on: March 08, 2010, 01:27:39 AM »
I'm mainly starting this so I can keep track of how my workout routines are evolving and I'm always happy to get some comments, suggestions or questions.

I'll start with a little introduction so people will know my athletic background (I've never made an introduction thread here).
I started training track&field when I was 14 years old and at that time I had no background in sports. In the beginning I tried out almost everything but was pointed out to try medium&long distance running so I did that until I was 16. At that time I started sprinting and with that much more weightlifting. I did much better than in the long distance and eventually I was mainly interested in competing in 60 meters indoor sprinting. After a year (then 17 years old) most of my workouts were in the gym, not on the track so I completely quit track&field and just lifted weights. The next year was ridiculous regarding to training where I mainly did the bench press and started doing a lot of curls and machine forced exercises (and used supplements such as creatine and protein powder). At 18 I was actually quite strong (mainly from lot of squats and cleans when I was training sprints) so I started training powerlifting. After abut a year of that (aged 19) I got involved in Crossfit, got familiar with the paleo diet and immediately switched to it.

I've now been doing Crossfit & paleo for 1,5 years (20 years now) and seen great results. However I'm constantly trying to improve so now I've cut out the medium&long distance running that came with the Crossfit mainsite program and am now doing a mix of non-running Crossfit mainsite workouts, Crossfit Football workouts (which are more strength and explosive based and judo.

You're 20 and have been doing Crossfit and Paleo for 18mon. O.K. I admit it, I'm a little envious.

Haha, thanks! I feel really fortunate to have stumbled up on Crossfit since that led me to Paleo which led me to this forum and the Caveman variation of Paleo. I don't know anyone in my country that is doing anything close to what I'm doing regarding to diet and especially how I combine it with my workout routines. When I try to explain this most people act like I'm crazy but I think they're just afraid of the unknown.

Welcome to the club. LOL!  My local fellow endurance athletes think I'm off my rocker because I don't eat grains. Others think I'm flirting with disaster because I cook veggies in saturated fat.  ::)

GOOD ON YOU!

I got Vibram Five Fingers yesterday, the KSO model and they're awesome! I used them in an urban workout today, went out and walked/jogged around my neighborhood looking for something to climb, pull, push, jump on or over and it felt great :)

I've completed building a sandbag that weighs 25kgs :D Did my first workout with it today that consisted of a walk to the park with stops (warmup), then about 50 sandbag burpees and finally walked the bag home.
This will probably be my routine for the next days or weeks but with varying workouts when in the park.

I've been loving the sandbag workouts. Did one metcon workout that consisted of sandbag getups and handstand pushups(hspu) and other today: 5 rounds in 12 minutes of 5 sandbag burpees and 15 sandbag bear hug squats.

I also recently started doing frogstands again and helt one for 1min 3secs today (first time over a minute). I think I'll start to do tuck planches in couple of days in my progression to a freestanding handstand.

I started doing tuck planches some time ago but can just hold it for maybe 2-5 seconds at a time. Actually I've also been doing frogstands with it and kicking up to freestanding handstands whenever I can (usually at work when there is not much to do :D)

Metcon workouts I do approximately 3 times a week which involve mainly sandbag exercises (burpees, clean&jerks, shoulder presses, push presses, bear hold squats, getups and swings (onto shoulder from ground)) along with freeweight exercises such as lunges, handstand pushups against a wall and lamppost climbs ;D (urban style)

Today I went for the first time in a long time cycling some distance. First I went to one of the few woodlands nearby and drank water from the lake. Then I kept going to the beach and checked out conditions for sea swimming, they were good so I'm planning to dive in the sea soon :P

I was going to say something along these lines. Only drink flowing water, preferably clear. Both giardia and cryptosporidium are present in North America.

While it is largely safe to drink water from natural sources like this (I do), you should be aware of the dangers. We don't have the immunity to deal with these critters anymore.

Might be a good idea to carry a water bottle + filter combo

Hey Iceman, I was wondering if you could elaborate a bit on your sandbag workouts. As you know, I do a lot of strength training and I'm looking to get into sandbag work. What do you like about it? How hard was it to build a big sandbag? Can you show me any good exercises on youtube?

Give me a good sell on it, maybe I'll start doing it too.

Well, at first I made a 25kg sandbag (with my bodyweight at 78kg).
I took too much time thinking about how to make it though as it is simpler than I thought. First I got 25kg sandbag (plastic) at my local hardware store, i put it directly into a rather strong polyester bag that I got for free from work (a duffle bag or a thick sack probably would've been better but I couldn't find one). Then I just taped the freaking polyester bag with duct tape, making sure to cover the bag completely with it.

What I do with it is metcon workouts like:
1. 50 sandbag burpees for time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8zz3JYXK4w)
2. 5 rounds for time of: 10 sandbag shouldering, switching shoulder each rep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ive8-vHgXQ) & 1 lamppost climb  (for total 50 shouldering & 5 lamppost climbs)
3. As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of: 10 sandbag clean&press (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7NuTHmz_tQ), 20 situps & 5 handstand pushups against a wall

I also really like what Blair Morrison is doing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU_moyF7-K8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSoRcqUeMYw&feature=PlayList&p=5A223CF90338A242&playnext_from=PL&index=76&playnext=1

What I like about the sandbag workouts is mainly that I imagine I'm hunting an animal. My 25kg probably represents a rather small game but when I feel that I've gained enough strength I'll make another 25kg bag, but them bot in a sack I recently bought (that has a zipper) and then I at least have a bag (50kg) that corresponds to a medium sized animal.
