kallyn's workout journal
« on: September 15, 2006, 02:53:20 PM »
I'm usually quite a lazy lump (sit on a computer chair all day), so I've decided to start exercising more.  I know from past experience that the gym is definitely NOT the place for me, so I've been doing other things.

For the past week or so I've done some stuff around the apartment, eg sprinting from one end to the other, pushups, climbing up and down the ladder to the loft and skipping rungs to simulate tree-climbing (hah!).  I also walked to the park and jumped up and down from some bleachers and hopped a few fences.

Yesterday I took a walk down to the lake and back for a total of 1.5 miles  (I found out the mileage using this nifty little page: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/).  I'm considering going back today and climbing a tree that I noticed yesterday that looked really great for climbing.

Today so far I've lugged a very heavy box of moving boxes from my car and up the stairs to the apartment, and done some packing and heavy lifting (well, heavy for me.  probably laughable for all you guys).

Saturday 9/16:
Went on a 6-mile hike with the hubby and his friend to Spray Park at Mount Rainier (google image search for spray park rainier for some gorgeous photos).  3 miles out and 3 back, with an elevation gain of 800 feet.  I don't know how I survived, as I have been mostly a couch potato for the past year, but somehow I powered through!

Sunday 9/17:
lazed around all day while my legs and butt screamed in agony trying to rebuild themselves

Haven't really done anything since my last post.  As I mentioned in my dinner thread, we're moving in less than a week, so I've kind of been running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get everything done!

Today/yesterday:
Carried around a lot of very heavy boxes and did a ton of vigourous scrubbing.  My arms are real sore!  Next up: driving cross-country for 5 days straight and then lugging around lots of furniture.   :'(

Ugh, I have literally not exercised ONCE since we moved in October.  And my normal day-to-day activities are very sedentary, so I have turned into a human slug.  It's not a pretty sight, guys.  Today I got fed up with it and I had a burst of energy, so I ran up and down the stairs quite a few times and then I went for a brisk walk around the new block and came back very winded.  Yay.  :)

Went for a walk around the entire neighborhood with DH today. We were out for 35 minutes and walked about exactly 1.5 miles according to this cool little web app:  http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

One of my new year's resolutions is to do that every day, and to do our new weight machine at least twice a week.  :)

The walking has not been going so great.  I seem to have a phobia about going out to walk outside by myself.  I know that we live in a safe area, but I'm so used to living in unsafe areas that I am finding it very hard to overcome my natural tendency to lock myself inside the house when I am alone.  I think I would be ok walking if I had a dog, but alas, the hubster is allergic.

In better news, went to the inlaws house for the weekend and helped with some pretty strenuous yard work (it was 70 degrees outside! in January!!).  I was lifting and carrying heavy paving stones, digging up old mulch, flattening a dirt hill, cleaning out a shed, etc.  It felt pretty good.  :)

Great!

Yard work is great 'real style' body movement (exercise).

DH was home from work today, so we went out on that walk around the whole neighborhood.  1.5 miles, took 33 min this time.

I have noticed that whenever I go walking outside for more than about 10 min and it is also cold (like today), that I get REALLY REALLY itchy on the fronts of my thighs to the point where I want to scream.  My thighs become red and blotchy, and scratching seems to only make it worse.  I looked it up and apparently it's a common condition called "cholinergic urticaria" aka exercise allergy.  Haha, I am allergic to exercise!  From what I've gathered in my 15 min of google reasearch, it's a histamine reaction in response to a rise in body temperature brought on by exercising (I think specifically, it is an IgE reaction) and the cold just makes it very pronounced.  Interesting stuff.  It doesn't deter me from wanting to exercise, though.

I used to have thesame phobia about walking alone, especially in the evening when it was getting dark.  I've found that listening to quiet music through headphones helps me to relax and enjoy myself.  After awhile I didn't even need it anymore and now I walk without fear!  :) Just keep on trying, and don't give up on yourself.  Fear is a reaction that can be conquered with steady practice.  (Now if only I could do as well with my fear of flying...  :-[) Suze

My parents are out of town for 2 weeks and left their dog with me.  :)  I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to get over my fear of going outside alone, but this silly puppy won't let me walk for more than about 5 feet at a time before she has to stop and sniff something.  I've gotten her to sprint briefly with me twice, though.  :)

Walked about .6 miles with the pooch today.  Not great, but more than I was doing before.  :)  Plus, sometimes I get her to do short sprints with me.

Have been doing (very) short runs on and off with the dog.  One day we went to the park and hiked a nature trail together, which made my legs sore for about 2 days.  :)  Have not done anything for the past few days.

I really need to get off my duff, huh?  When I get back home (at the parents' house right now), I am resolved to clear the crap away from my weight machine and use it.

I've been exercising for the past 2 days!  Yeah!  I've been doing the free workouts from http://www.ttapp.com, mainly the half-frogs and the hoedowns.  I think I can see a difference already in my stomach/waist.   8)

I've been continuing the ttapp exercises and adding more in.  I'm now doing the hoedowns, half-frogs, awesome legs, diva derrier, and arm pops.  I did take about a week off though for womanly reasons.  You'd think paleo would've helped my PMS by now, but no.

Anyway I am sore all over.  :(  I guess that's a good thing though!
