I never said you were stupid- wasn't where you are at your age, so..., I'm in position to toss rocks.

Recent discussions with fitness friends-- talking about false feedback from "Mickey Mouse" cross-trainers, and one brought up a new offering-- www.nikefree.com -- Nike's effort to get out in front of the anti-moon-boot athletic shoe as a negative input device.

I have a habit of training [and living as much as possible] in surf shoes, including the rare running I do.

[Paleo analogy-- the old bulls send out the young ones to run far and fast to beat the bush. I'm an old enough bull that I ain't doing the bushbeating]

Interesting nike thing. Seems to me like you'd have to be pretty gullible to believe anything nike says about 3 "levels" of progression (and three pairs of expensive shoes) being necessary. I saw some other thing which was basically a thin rubber sleeve for your foot, fitting around each individual toe. You're basically running barefoot, just with a tough exterior on your foot.

9-7-07 - Smallish, quick paced weight workout. Deadlifts, clean and press, DB snatch, weighted vertical jumping, russian full contact twist.

At that point, why bother?  Just run barefoot and build up a nice callous (when I was younger I would go barefoot all summer and develop what I called "summer feet", ie the ability to run across gravel without pain).  Some even argue that shoes are an unnatural creation that mess with our posture and balance and whatnot.  http://www.runningbarefoot.org/

I worry about things like ringworm. We have outside cats, and roving dogs, and wild animals around, and the old wive's knowledge says that you'll get worms from walking around barefoot outside.

Made up for my inability to find time for exercise lately with a huge hard workout today. Sprinting, rock lifting,  rock pressing, rock carrying, rock throwing, rock lunging, hauling HUGE rocks up the hilll with a handtruck. (Mom needed them for some landscaping.) Really really exhausting stuff, at least 45 minutes.

Regarding the shoe stuff: I got it in my head to make myself some moccasins, with some leather I have laying around. I made one, really rough and ugly with blue dacron thread (intended for bowstring making) for the lacing. I got through one and it kind of fits, but I need another, and I used the last really large piece of leather I have to make the first one. I'd have to change my design, and make it be really really ugly, if I wanted to use the pieces I have left. I think we have a really huge piece of nice leather somewhere....

I don't disagree in re NIKE marketing-- but there may be value for folk that need a slower paradigm shift.

And some folk aren't interested in goiong all the way; at least they have the opportunity to start reducing their 'Mickey Mouse' shoe habit.

Where did you see those foot 'sleeves'? I saw them on someone in the street with them and have't been able to structure the search that brings them up.

Hate to go a weekend without exercise, but I have a fairly bad cold that's been going around at school. Congested, woozy, and achy. Surprising at this time of year, but there it is. Incidentally, around the time I would have contracted this thing, I was cheating quite a bit, involving a glazed lemon pound cake my mom got, and lots of raisins.

Make sure you get your 8 hours each night to keep the immune system tickin.

I generally get less than seven hours per weeknight. I would love to sleep like a paleo and get like ten hours and hit the sack at sundown and rise with the sun, but that's just not possible. I have to get up before six to get to school, and my schoolwork can easily keep me working until around ten, including time to cook and eat dinner, and some amount of leisure in between.

Lemon pound cake *was* worth it.

Finally got around to making something to run in. Got a pair of old socks, and sewed a thin leather sole to the bottom. I have the cushioning from the leather and the sock, but it's quite near barefoot.

Just did a sprinting, rock carrying workout. Wow. My calves, hamstrings were sore within a few bursts. :)

Yesterday I did a quick but effective deadlift/clean and press workout.

Today, already sore from yesterday, I helped move rocks from down the hill up the hill, to help in making a garden we're establishing. A considerable distance, including a steep hill. Small rocks I straddled with my arms and walked them up. Bigger rocks, I put in the hand truck and pulled up.

Let's just say that I'm going to have fun trying to walk tomorrow.

I've been busy and haven't really updated this, but I've generally been doing a couple of workouts around every weekend. Some weights, some sprinting, etc. I've decided that playful sprinting and jumping barefoot or near barefoot outside on natural surfaces is the most fun exercise ever.
