Trying to stay healthy
«
on:
April 28, 2007, 07:43:02 AM »
Today
1 h bodyweight strength training (which is also cardio, balance and stretching), 1 h hill hike (rougher than jogging, I tell ya).
1 h means everything between 55 and 65 min...

1 h bodyweight training, 1 h hill hike and 45 min upper body weight training. I wonder if I need to do upper body twice a week. It's really not strong at all.

1 h hill hike, 1 h bodyweight training. Also three short walks (about 30 min each) in the forest with the dog.

I can't believe how tired I am today. The dog is wearing me out completely. Advice for new dog owners: don't buy a big dog (settle for a cat).
Three short walks with the dog. 1 h bodyweight training.

I want a big dog just so that it forces me to work out!
What kind of pup did you get?

I got a 3-year old Golden Retriever.
He doesn't come when I call for him, he doesn't recognize his name. He won't walk properly, he's dragging me after him - but he's not agressive, atleast. The animal shelter people really wanted him out of the place he was in now (his third home?). He's a lot of work.
Before the weekend I didn't even know I was getting a dog this fast. I had been looking in to puppies from a kennel. There is a lot to teach him, and also to make him trust me. I'm so tired lately. I have to be around him most of the time the first days. School was a disaster today. I have faith that he will learn the basics eventually (by eventually I mean hopefully within a month...). I'm sleeping on the floor with him. Not comfy...
Be sure to raise a good dog if you get one. Otherwise your exercise with the big dog will be chasing him.
Not fun.
He'll get there, and then it will actually be fun to take him for a walk.

Only two short walks with the dog. I got someone to walk him while I was at school. Bodyweight training 1 h. Love it.

1 h 5 min hill hike. Dog came with me. It's the same route as yesterday, but we were gone longer than that. So it was quite slow paced. 1 h body weight training. 2 short walks with the dog.

Still walking the dog and doing strength training, but the weather has gotten colder, and it's not as tempting to hike anymore... Cold! Windy! Brrrr.
Also, after I got the dog (one week ago), I haven't been able to get out of bed to have a morning jog, a couple of times a week. In fact, I've been so tired that I've slept in most days, and have been late for school every single day the last week.
Every time I take him for a walk, the focus is on teaching him this and that. It doesn't constitue as physical exercise (more
patience
).

Sounds like this dog is an excellent lesson in zen practice! Keep up the good work.

Thank you.
Yes, he's sure testing my patience. Yesterday I gave up calling on him and pulled him by his leash. I know that's not the right reaction, but I just wanted to scream at him "you stupid ## ## ##!!!" after trying for ten minutes.
I think I handled it okay, seeing the situation.
I give him time, but this time it was like he was just looking at me, going "lalala I caaaaan't heeeaar youuuu!".
I think Golden Retrievers in general are easily distracted.
Jogging in PE! Finally I am back to jogging!
Hard. But fun.

I
have
been exercising since, what, mid-May, was it?
But it's been very much school and dog. He's gotten so much better (lacking a little on reliability). It's night and day having a dog that is trained!
Sunday: 3 h hike in the mountains.
Monday: 3 h hike in the mountains.

If you want to see something funny, try walking a cat. He'll just look at you like you've lost your mind. "What, you think I'm a dog or something?!?"
