What I'm working on
« on: April 07, 2010, 04:50:59 PM »
I have a workout I am currently training up to. Some of the exercises I cannot fully do yet, although I can do the cheat versions.

It goes as follows:
5x free hanging muscle ups
5x/arm, declined one-handed push ups
5x/arm, one armed chin ups
5x, front lever pull ups
5x handstand push ups
5x/leg, one legged squats

All of these are to be done with a negative contraction element. This is to be done as a circuit. Repeat until you die.

I am still training up to the muscle ups, one armed pulls and front lever raises. Minus sprints and some extra sprint conditioning, this is my old workout but with upgrades. Wish me luck.

Damn, that's pretty hardcore. Are you related to Wlfdg, by chance?

No, but I'm starting to read his posts and like his training style. Somehow or another I have to get hold of a big rock soon.

I've got quite a large piece of land also, lots of trees, no rocks. So I use a large chunk of a tree trunk, it's heavy and awkward and gets the job done.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

I'm jealous of you people. I like in a big city. I'd love to own a plot of land (though I fear the uneducated masses in the rural areas of the midwest, here. *insert Deliverance banjo*). I'd love to move up to the Pacific Northwest.

But I digress...

Construction sites are great places to look for big rocks for training.

I found something new to do!

So by one of my classrooms, there is a wooden shade structure with large cross-beams flanked by round 4" metal poles. I'm going to come back after dark and climb up the pole, hand-over-hand my way across the shade structure, then climb down the other metal pole. I think repeating this a few times would be good exercise.

Loving the goals you've set! Will be extremely impressive if you can do them all eventually :)

Seeing as you're doing front lever pull ups, have you thought about working up to doing a planche and planche push ups?

Holy shit, I would love to be able to do that. How the hell do you begin training for such a thing?

I looked it up. Well, it looks like it's the exact opposite of front-lever pulls, both in muscles worked and in how you train up to them.

My dad is the one helping me train up to front lever pulls, and he taught me that you start by doing the move with your legs pulled up to your chest and gradually work up to doing the pullups with your legs further out, eventually being able to do them solidly with your legs parallel to the ground.

I looked it up on youtube and I guess you train planche pushups the same way: you start in a frog stand and work up to doing frog-stand pushups, then gradually get used to extending your legs. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend!

I just got done walking around in the woods by my school. I've gotta say, merely walking up and down hills, crouching through brush, jumping over obstacles, pulling yourself up rocks and the like is a hard workout by itself unless you're already Tarzan. I'm tired. It's really cool out here, some of the local frat boys have set up a bunch of stuff in the woods. There's a fairly solid lean-to type building they've made (which of course reeks of the smell of weed and is littered with old beer cans), and they've set up a few varieties of pullup bars out in between the trees.

It was so cool that I'd even go so far as to say that if hipsters spent half the time they spend petitioning to save the forests was actually spent out IN the forests learning to be real wild animals again, I might not hate them so badly.

There's a great article here which shows progressions towards both the front lever and planche.

Well, summer is approaching. I've never had a summer off before. Literally, ever. I'm 22 and went to year-round school. I'm almost gradjumicated from college and this summer is my first summer off, so I've got some plans.

I was going to do either 4 workouts a week or a workout every 3 days, whichever I can do without overtraining.

Workout #1 was going to be all of the bodyweight stuff I do now: Pullups, pushups, one-handed pullups, one legged squats, front lever pulls, handstand pushups etcetera, done with incremental pauses and static holds.
Workout #2 was going to be a heavy load of sprinting and jumping, some with and some without a filled 5 gallon water jug held in various positions.
Workout #3 was going to be rock climbing on the school rock wall which I just found.
Workout #4 was going to be powerlifting - squats, deadlifts, bench presses, clean & jerks, farmer's walks etcetera over at my school's gym.

I'll likely also be conditioning my grip, my hand strength, my memory and my eyesight daily during this period as well, and probably stretching a lot during off days.

My dad is going to teach me the ropes of hunting over summer as well, teaching me how to sneak up on game, how to walk in the woods, the behavior of animals, tracking etcetera, so this will just add to my general Tarzanry.

Combine that with a lot of paleo food and a lot of sleep and I hope to be Goku by the end of summer.
