Max will be 6 in Sept.

He had a CCL repair in '08 on his right leg. I've been rehabbing him to try and avoid his needing surgery on the left.

His ancestors have been pulling loads across ice and tundra for thousands of years. He is physically adapted to that type of terrain and work. All the up and down here is hard on him.  :(

Portering - Day II Same as above. I am tired. Heavy pack!

These people you are portering for are just doing day trips? So even just carrying one meal and water for a day is beyond them?
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

Overnight trips.
They have tents, pads, sleeping bags, food, cookware, stoves, fuel and a lot of wine.  ::)

Mtn.Biking - 8.6mi. 2208 vert.ft. Legs were sore from the last 2 days. Had to get out and get some restorative exercise going. Dogs were happy.

During Thursday's ride I hit a stump concealed at the edge of the singletrack and I'm pretty sure I fractured at least my big toe.  :( BUMMER!

I've been doing my best to ignore it. I'm hoping that I'll be able to squeeze into my mountain bike shoes.  :-\

Toes can cause you a lot of long term nuisance if they don't heal up right.

I know  ;). My feet are battered! I've broken all my toes, some multiple times. Shattered both naviculars, collapsed my left cuboid. You'll love this, one of my favorite ways to close the gap is to check a right leg kick early with the arch of my left foot. I have a lump in the arch of my foot the size of a golf ball from, probably, 2 decades of it?

This isn't the first time I've done this type of injury mtn. biking.  :-\

The big toe is a big deal. If it's any of the smaller ones, a doctor is likely to shrug and tell you to tape it to the next toe over. The bones are too small to do anything about. I have two very crooked toes due to breakage. But you can get your big toe set and/or casted up.
