Anyone Doing Starting Strength?
« on: September 14, 2009, 03:22:32 PM »
If so, how is your performance on the paleo diet?  I am doing SS at work and some HIIT on my elliptical at home.  My schedule as follows.

Mon - SS - Squat, bench, power cleans
Tues - Rest
Wed - HIIT for 35 minutes.
Thurs - SS - Squat, overhead press and deadlifts
Fri - Rest
Sat - HIIT for 35 minutes
Sun - SS - Squat, bench, pendlay rows (bent over row)

This continues on with weights every third day.  I'm new to Paleo, not really even started it yet allthough I have started cutting back my bad carbs in general with good results.  I enjoy a LOT of dairy, but all skim varietys.  I find cheese and yogurt and skim milk to be healthy snacks so my jury is still out on the elimination of dairy all together.  I don't buy into the drinking all the milk as the author of starting strength advocates.  I am in my mid 30's and that is more so for the 18 year old kid brand new to the weight room and in desperate need of putting on weight for football or what have you.  I need to lose about 20 lbs of pure fat.  I recently had a physical and all my numbers are in the excellent range and my resting heat rate was 53, and a bp of 98/65.

I know some of your crossfitters do some olympic lifts, but is anyone doing the SS program exactly?  Thanks for the feedback and for the great site, it's very informative.

I have been doing paleo for over 2 months now and started Rippetoe's program last week. Losing fat will be easy once you cut the dairy and eat complete paleo. If you have to cheat I recommend you do it like Cordain advices, with scheduled cheats so that it does not become a thing you do out of desperation.

As far as the workout, mine is a little different but kind of the same, let me explain:

Workout A - Squat, Bench, Dead lift
Workout B - Squat, military press, rows

Workout 3 times a week with no 2 sequential days (so I chose Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, just because the gym is not as full during those day here in my university) interchanging the workouts every session (A, B, A, B, A, ...).

My cardio is basically walking around campus from class to class (UF is a big campus) and sprinting whenever I get a chance. Not really that often, I am kind of a geek and I'm inundated with projects, but oh well...
Right Now.

Sounds like we are on the same page with the workout program.  I've been doing it for a few months now and I have to tell you, this is hands down, the best program for weight lifting.  How in incorporates the entire body each time, how it wears me out with each workout and in only 35-40 minutes, and how much stronger I have gotten in just a few months, I could not reccomend this program any stronger for just about anyone.

My concern with cutting out the dairy is the struggle my workouts would become and that will take some fine tuning as I progress along and tweak this program and my diet.  I do realize however that diet is about 75% of my problem and especially carbs.  I am a work in progress.  How do you like thw workouts ?  What is your favorite part?  Once I learned to do deadlifts correctly, I LOVE them.  Something inherantly caveman to lift heavy things off the ground.  lol  For some reason I struggle with the bench press, that is the hardest most slowly progressing lift I have.  Oh well, I'll keep trying.  Thanks for the reply!

So you have been on it for a while... that's great. Hope i get the same results.

My favorite part is definitely Squats (and I get to do them every work out :D). Although I have always gained muscle in the upper body faster, I just love doing squats for some reason. About the diet, yeah it might be rough at the beginning. I play racquetball and when I turned into paleo the complete first month was really bad for me. I barely could play a whole game, the racket would fall off my hands. Truly horrible.

What I learned is that it takes some time for the body to get used to paleo. Probably like 3 weeks. After that, I had a big problem because I was not getting enough calories even without even knowing. I was always full so I didn't eat more. What happened is that I was not eating enough fat. DON'T make this mistake. Get your fats in. After that, everything has been uphill. Again, eat your fats!
Right Now.
