It doesn't seem to be a real active area but does anyone work out to dvd’s at home? I know some people think they’re cheesy but I love em! Seems most use to be basically all cardio but more recently there are some decent weighted workouts. I’m stock piling all the new weighted stuff that comes out just in case there’s a lull on it later…I hate not having a new workout to do when I finally hit the “ugh I’m so bored with this” stage lol!
So after my sharp stick and berry basket, my bowflex selecttech dumbbells are next on my most favorite equipment list hehe!
If it’s possible to post pics here I’ll share a few. I’ve done weighted workouts in the past but used lighter weight doing a billion reps. Results were ok but I’ve more recently discovered heavier weight less reps is where it’s at. So that’s what’s rock’n my world these days and I spend less time at it too, yay!
Right now I’m doing another round of Chalean Extreme and I’m on my second week of the burn phase again. A phase is 4 weeks and this phase is a 12 rep max of combo moves and of course weight depends on the individual. Each phase is a bit different so the next one is heavier weight and 6-8 reps. Every day is a different workout for the week, but today’s workout was:
Sumo squat with hip lift
Lunge with posterior fly
Push ups with leg lift
Dead lift with posterior fly
Lunge with core rotation
Bench press and leg lower
Squat with side bend
Forward lean lunge with DBL arm posterior fly
Chest fly with hip lift
I’m mixing up this round with another workout (STS, legs) so that I can get some extra lower body in. I hope to get a bigger bang for the buck adding in extra of the larger muscle group stuff...we shall see!
Well I’ve probably blabbed on long enough for now but it would be great to hear what others are doing, what your favorite workouts are etc!

Wlfdg…yikes that’s some hard core s**t right there dude!
I checked out the naked warrior dvd preveiw, then tested out my one leg squat abilities…umm well I could use some practice fo sure lol! I can actually do a one arm push up. I can’t get quite all the way down as far as they should be done, and I’m better at them when I have them in a program so I get the weeks of practice but yeah, those I can pull off a bit better. I’ll have to dig out my pic of that…I have a one arm taken a couple years ago. Dive bombers, l like those cuz they’re just so different! Do you have that workout and if so what do you think about it? A couple comments were that he goes too fast from one exercise to another and something about reps. It looks like a good challenge workout, No doubt it would put me in my place lol! Another comment was about it being a short workout...gad I would sure hope so lol!
I take it you do a lot of kettle balls stuff? Those things scare me…seriously, I wonder about ripping a shoulder right out of the socket the way people throw those things around lol!
Thanks for the link!

Hey Posy, Your welcome, glad you liked it.
Naked Warrior- Have the book.
I'm a huge fan of brief, intense workouts.
I love it all - kettlebells, dumbbells, barbells, rubber bands, boulders, sledgehammers, bodyweight, etc.... I think variety is key. I think learning as many ways to stimulate your body towards fitness goals makes the journey that much easier. Application of education is power.

Wlfdg…I agree…variety is nice for sure!
I’ve decided to move over to the workout journal area. Not sure it really matters but I’ll make the move anyway. Oh and if anyone else runs across a good dvd workout I’d love to know/chat about them. I’m always on the lookout for new ones!

I don't belong to a gym, so if I'm not biking, walking, or jogging, I'm working out to videos. I don't do well when I try to follow diagrams with yoga routines or weight sets, I need something to lead me like I was in a classroom. And since I hate running (and suck at it) I do a lot of videos.
My favorite group of videos is The Firm workouts. I do their Cardioweight system set the most, and then some other random ones that they sell separately. I'd say they're more designed for the average woman's preferences- aerobics, and lunges, squats, etc, but light weights (3-10 lbs) with high repetition, sometimes combined with cardio. If anyone's interested, I know my local library carries a lot of their dvd's, so maybe check out your library to see if you can try before you buy.

thinknice…I don’t do the gym thing either. I like the convenience and time savings of just walking into the next room to work out. Plus like you said, I like having some one in front of me. The more they ramble on, the better too lol!
I’ve heard of the firm but I’ve never done one of their workouts. I’ll have to check those out for sure! I know some one else who has done those but I thought she said they didn’t make them any more so I probably misunderstood. The program I’m doing now is geared toward lifting as heavy as you can. What ever that is for the individual, failing at so many reps…it‘s different for everyone. I’ll try and post what I started with and what I’m using now in my journal tomorrow. I’m no wonder woman at this stuff but weighted workouts give me a rush and until I started doing them I never had that “energy” you’re suppose to get from working out…or the muscle, so I'm hooked!
Have you ever tried doing your cardio weight system workout with less reps, heavier weight?
Some times
you can adapt the lighter weighted workouts that way, and it’s like a whole new program again!
I’ll post some of my favorite dvd workouts too when I get minute. The library is a great idea for a test drive, hadn‘t thought of that!

These are some I‘ve done or will do plus a little info...
My top two are from Beachbody but I just want to say, I am not involved in their company marketing stuff, I’m NOT a so called “coach” and I’m not selling any of their products. The company is one of those multi-level marketing deals now. To each their own, but I’m not involved in it so I’m not trying to make a buck by suggesting these workouts. These are all just workouts I’ve done or do etc. Just wanted to make that clear because there are so many “coaches” running around out there now a days pitching product.
Chalean Extreme
(CE) - Slow and controlled weighted workouts. Geared mostly toward women but they did have guys in the test group and have one guy in each video. The full program is 4 months long if you choose to do the last mixed phase. It’s a different phase each month. Also a different workout each day, five days a week. 3 weighted workouts approx 30 min each, 1 interval, approx 40 min, 1 cardio/drill, approx 20 min. You repeat the week for four weeks as a phase. Each phase is different. Really good instruction on form and she talks non stop so the time goes by quickly.
P90X
(X) - Geared toward men but women can totally do this as well. They have one woman in each video. It’s suggested that men use more weight and do less reps and women use lighter weight and do more reps. I wouldn’t do it that way again. Next time I’ll up the weight and cut the reps. In most of the workouts you run down each exercise then repeat it all. I’d also skip the repeated exercises, cutting the time to approx 30 minutes. Great variety in this program, a different workout every day for the week. 3 phases, 3 months long. It’s a 6 day a week program to include a 90 minute yoga workout. I skip the yoga making it a 5 day a week program. Not sure but I’d guess the X infomercial in on you tube as well.
Cathe’s Shock Training System
(STS) - I think her stuff is geared mostly for women but guys do her stuff too. I haven’t done this program yet as a whole. I’ve been adding the different leg workouts in to my current program. It’s next on my list though. I don’t have any doubt this will be a good program and there‘s like 40 different workouts to this set. Workouts are 3 days a week for 3 months. The only thing I’m not into is finding my 1 rep max and all that. My thought, why use a lower weight than you can manage but I’m sure there’s a whole science behind it. I’ll use what ever is a decent challenge and go for it. She does have a place on her site to figure all that out though. I think most of these workouts are all 40 plus min long.
Amy Bento’s Slo-Mo Strength Challenge
- geared toward women, no guys in the video. This is another slow and controlled workout so it’s good but Amy isn’t very talkative so the time can seem to drag now and then. I haven’t done this for long periods of time but I’d go back to it so it’s a keeper.
Barry’s Bootcamp
…The old one, not the new one with that green pill shaped ball thingy…I have no idea what that’s all about. The old one though was ok…been awhile that I’ve done it. A different workout every day, 5 days a week for how ever long you want to do it I guess.
Jari Love’s Get Extremely Ripped
- Totally geared for women…there was one guy in the video waaaay in the back and I never noticed him till we were in quite a ways. I just did workout 1 from this today for the first time. It uses light weight throughout the 30 minute workout so more of an interval workout. I’ll try out workout 2 maybe next week but the interval workout in CE is far better and challenging IMO. This might be ok for once in a great while but I don’t think it’s going to be my thang. From what I experienced in workout 1, I would never end up extremely ripped from this one!
Any who, those are a few I have. I have others but some are preludes like for instance P90. Not really worth messing with IMO. May as well go straight for the meat and dive in. I use to be intimidated by weights or some workouts but just about anything can be adapted in one way or another to be doable for the individual so I’ve gotten over that. Wish I would have gotten over it sooner than I did lol!

The only DVD workout I have ever liked was Keli Roberts's "10-Minute Solution Kickboxing Bootcamp". I found it to be quite challenging without being ridiculously difficult to follow or too bouncy (which I cannot stand) and it incorporates weights with cardio together, which I found really effective. It did help me change my body shape and become more defined and I would only do it about once a week (and go to the gym for cardio and some weights 2-4 times/week). I also like the fact that it's neither too long nor too short - you get everything done, including your abs, in just under an hour (about 50 min. in total) and let me tell you - I feel really sore the next day almost every time so it does work.
The first few times are hard, but then you just push through it and get used to it and you feel amazing in under an hour. There've been odd times when I'd wear a sweat suite to shed more water weight but I couldn't keep up with that for too long as it's excruciating.
