Is my trainer giving me the right workout?
« on: January 05, 2012, 03:03:04 AM »
Hiya,

I've been doing paleo for about 5 months now, and have been seeing a kettlebell and strength trainer since November. For a bit of background, I am female, 25yo, 168cm, 67kg, healthy and relatively fit - but very weak! And I've got some belly fat to drop (currently size 12 Australian dress size).

So I have one session a week with my trainer, and then she gives me workouts to do from home. I think her style is more metabolic than pure strength training and I'm not sure if this is a good thing, or if I need a mix of both in a week.

Here's my usual week for this month:
Monday training: warm-up, some kettlebell technique work (deadlifts, swings, presses, etc.), kettlebell circuit with swings and squats and presses, metabolic stuff like burpees and hill climbs to finish.
Wed: home workout (from trainer) - 4 x plank walks + weighted squats, 4 x inclined push-ups + high-knee jogs, 4 x side-way jogs + burbees (all up 15 minutes with warm-up)
Fri: hill sprint for 10 minutes
Sunday: Same home workout.
Might do some walking and dancing in there somewhere to.

So my question is, am I doing enough strength work or am I doing more metabolic work than strength? And should I be asking her to focus on lifting heavy things and body weight stuff more?

Thanks for reading :)

Thanks for that link Rollin - I understood most of it, minus the tough-guy jargon. Not sure what you mean by progressive, but it certainly gets harder as I go.

It's probably good but looks too complicated. I'd just do heavy squats on Monday, heavy deadlifts on Friday and sprints in between.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Yes I mean progressively harder, heavier weight or density. (more reps while maintaining form within a certain time frame), progressively harder bodyweight exercises etc.

I reckon a barbell is king & joining a gym would be ideal tho homemade sandbags are a inexpensive tool for resistance training at home.

Okay thanks for that advice. I think I'll take a look at what other people do for their usual workouts too and get some more ideas there :)
