That is a great article, I tend to get up at around 5am to start my workout so I have plenty of time to add in some functional exercises.. Time to re-write my workout.
I also see you're a practitioner of Rippetoe's Starting Strength, I have a friend who's made ridiculous progress with it and it's a resolution of mine to start it soon. The guy's a genius. Cheers, good posts.

I also see you're a practitioner of Rippetoe's Starting Strength,
I've actually been training like this since I was a kid. It's the way my father taught me to lift. My first weight set came with a poster with routines on it from Bill Pearl. That was in 1977? I did give a go to bodybuilding style training for a while ala, Arnold's Encyclopedia, Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty and workouts in Joe Weider's Myth and Fiction magazine.

I have always returned to the basics though.

Renaissance Body Development by Christian Thibaudeau
http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/renaissance_body_development

That is one of the most sensible and functional workout plans I have ever seen.

Looks like something I can make happen quite easily with what I have at hand, will have to figure out something for the sandbags though.

But wtf are you really meant to have a 60-90 second rest in between sets? I wait like 20 seconds at most.

What is Starting strength about?

The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

What are you trying to figure out?

Figure out as in I don't have any so will have to figure out/make something that will do the job.

Well yeah that's what I was thinking, with longer rests I could definitely add quite a bit more weight.

As to starting strength, looks like it actually slots in seamlessly with the first workout plan you posted in this thread.

Samjohn, I got a lot of great results from working out with a big rock. It weighs about 40kg. Didn't cost me anything.

I definitely have lots of rocks. Maybe a nice and heavy hardwood log would do the trick also.

Yeah I dig Waterbury, but I'm gonna see how I do with the first one there for a while.

Resting for longer meant I could add 20kg to the bar straight away.

I knew you did. I figured it would be an interesting read.

In one thing I read by Waterbury he references a study that found doing two short (15-20 min) weight sessions a day 3 times a week showed a small (4%) increase in muscle gain but a 38% increase in strength as compared to one long session (1 hour) 3 x a week.

So with this Renaissance Body Development program, do you think it would be ok to do the strength portion twice?
ie do the whole Renaissance Body Development workout in the morning, then in the evening repeat just the strength part?

Would it be ok to do the Tabata thing on all the off days?

So Renaissance Body Development Mon Wed Fri (with added strength training), and sprints or tabata on every other day?

IMO- What I think would be the ideal is stick to BR format but split Phase II and Phase III into different portions of the day. In the morning you will have(Phase I & II) strength/power training and at night have (Phase III & IV) strength/endurance.

I think Tabata and/or HIIT on alternate days would be super beneficial!

Make sure you have a full rest day in there as well. A nice mellow stroll for an hour or so on this day would be great. Good active recovery. ;)
