Your Workout Sucks!
« on: November 14, 2009, 06:22:04 AM »
This is true greatness from Charles Staley. It's about the difference between being and exerciser and an athlete. Some true gems of training philosophy. My favorite is "Walking is not exercise, it's locomotion."
It's 7 short videos that excerpts from a seminar. This is a MUST watch if you have any fitness goals.

Mr Charles is the man. I have run into a few trainers who trained under him.

Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff.
Any idiot can get on a treadmill and watch TV and then take great pride in the fact they've exercised.

I liked what he said about low weight high reps…I like leaving a workout with more energy than I came with…I don’t with that nasty high rep stuff, blech :P

He doesn’t like P90X because it’s in an infomercial and some where he got the idea they advertise it as only needing one dumbbell OR a pull up bar.  Now I could see it if he thought it sucked because it has too much isolation vs. compound…or some other reason.  But that came out sounding more like he’d rather not have any competition from something people wouldn‘t need a trainer for, to me.  His reason for why it sucks, sucked lol ;)

I get the athlete mind set but he lost me in the 7th video just the same…if hot dog boy is thinking and training like an athlete then no reason the same can’t be true for yoga or walking.  Which voids what he said about those earlier.  *sigh* so I still missed the point didn't I? :-\

I found this in one of his Q&A areas, I like it ;D

When P90X first came out they would advertise something to the effect that you didn't need a gym full of equipment to get the physique of the models that they were using for the advertisement. You could use a pullup bar or a dumbbell. Something like that. I kind of remember the infomercial? I do remember my first reaction to it was "BS!"

What he means is that "Hot Dog Boy" approaches his training with the mindset of an athlete. The whole point of the whole seminar is to bridge the gap and learn to train like an athlete not workout like an exerciser. "Exercisers train to hurt" they have a "it hurts it must be good attitude" Athletes train to manage fatigue. When I lift weights, as soon as the concentric portion of my lift slows down I halt the set and take a rest. Then do another set.

Because Yoga and walking have minimal true physical fitness benefits they aren't exercise. In order for walking to truly (physiologically speaking) become exercise you have to move at a fast pace and then it becomes running. Or, you have to go up a very steep incline for a minimum of 20min.(sustained) and then it becomes climbing. He does mention that this is relative to individual needs.

Yoga he lumps in the body weight training. There is a cap to it. It can only do so much for you and then thats it. You can't actually train in Yoga. You can hold poses for longer periods but all that really does is help you hold poses for longer periods. The same thing with training to do say, 500 pushups. You aren't recruiting any more motorunits on #360 than you did on #1. So it has no true training effect.

Athletes who do Yoga as part of their training do it for it recovery benefits. That is the opposite of training.  Same with walking. I walk for an active recovery day.

thanks for explaining.  And I’ll just take your word for it that yoga is recovery because wow some of that seems intense to me lol ;)
The P90X people aren’t models but those results are after several times through the whole program, not just once which is lead to believe.  So half BS.

Yoga is intense but so is a deep tissue massage. They effect the body in a similar way.

From a industry professional standpoint the only thing revolutionary about programs like P90X is the marketing campaign. You become very doubtful of that.

There was a famous bodybuilding training and supplement program sold through infomercial in the late 80's early 90's. They used these "Before and After" photos of a pro-bodybuilder. The folks in the bodybuilding industry knew that the "Before" was taking after he was told to get fat and sloppy. So the "After" photo was what he looked like normally. Not to mention that the "supplements" that were really responsible for his physique can't be bought legally over the counter and many require a syringe for dosage.

Totally understandable and I wouldn’t even say their marketing is revolutionary…they’re into the pyramid scheme stuff these days.  What the X has to offer in it’s program has been around for forever…nothing new.  Maybe the way it’s all grouped together in one place could be considered “revolutionary“  in a stretch.  The company marketing is horrible yes.  The bottom line is the $, and lot’s of it, nothing wrong with making a buck but in actuality it’s company groupies out hump’n the product, who are told, (as so called “coaches“ UGH!), that they‘re doing everyone a favor by spewing the companies jargon.  Not stupid, just duped, imo.  But anyway, I get side tracked, sorry.

Regardless of how I feel about the company, I can separate my feelings and don’t think P90X is as bad as it’s generally thought of in the professional world.  Of course there’s the un cool DVD factor involved which doesn’t do much for the impressing the credible professional trainer at this point in time.  My impression is it’s also embarrassing that home workouts could maybe be decent. The mind set of that is something that I would like to see change so that some day some one would put together a few programs that just left out all the ridiculous worthless time wasting fluff thrown in, because yes, there‘s where the marketing comes back into the picture, again…More hype than much worth while.  So I guess what I’m trying to point out is there actually is more meat, even with the marketing hype, in the X and it can be beneficial.  Which does make it different.  Maybe they just got lucky with that one lol ;)  Umm, similar to what Charles was saying about just start with turning tires to begin with.  I should also mention that I don‘t agree with everything X, it‘s just not as horrible as it‘s made out to be.

Yeah I think that happens more than people think with the fat and sloppy pictures or probably these days, a photo shop type program.  Believe me I’m not being naive in this case. In the newest infomercial they didn’t use a new test group though like they did in the first.  Most were groupies who have been at it for years.

I don't think you are being naive at all.

I don't think P90X is a bad thing. Personally, I think anything that gets people doing resistance training is a good thing. "Walking isn't exercise, it's locomotion." It's the hype that is a big "YAWN!"

Home training has always been a great thing. In the competitive strength world there are countless examples of people who developed themselves in their garages. Steve Reeves started out with stuff he made on his farm in Montana and training in his barn.

There is one moment in that video series that was an epiphanic moment for me.  It is at 2:10 of the first segment when Chris says, "By the way, it's only been recently in human history that being sedentary was even an option, right, because throughout the vast bulk of human existence you had to be rigorously active just to survive.  So, this has only been a recent thing that you've even had that choice and that's where the term 'survival of the fittest' comes from."

It seems so many people want the body of a dancer or an athlete, but don't want to embrace a healthy lifestyle.  There is no quick fix.

There is no quick fix.

I don't know about that, I've only been doing my workout for just over a month and I am already seeing changes in my body.

The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you have a past history of athletic pursuits. Never discount muscle memory.
