I'm so hungry by lunchtime though. Its not like I am having sweet stuff full of carbs that will give me an insulin spike.

Bit confused and would love a bit more energy.

I was puzzled by the afternoon tiredness, but I agree with Tarlach that carbs at breakfast will definitely make you hungry at lunch.  Best to save the fruit for dinner.

Also, I think sometimes people on the paleo diet get colds without any of the normal symptoms, they just get tired and sleepy and don't realize they are sick.

Thanks for this--I think I'm going through this right now.  I watch a baby who is actually sick w/ RSV (coldlike bug that is highly contagious) and these past 2 days I have been feeling tired, and slightly foggy headed--just not optimum.  But I don't really feel sick, so I've been wondering what's going on...  I really think this is it--I have a 'cold', but just feel slightly less than optimal.  It's amazing how powerful our diets are!!!

I have just received the paleo diet update, newsletter from L. Cordain.
I have seen there is a bit on the subject, so maybe it may provide some good info.

Quote
The Paleo Diet Update v3, #4 - The Paleo Concept, Part 2
Low Energy Phase

Dr. Cordain,

I have a client who is lacking energy after having switched to the Paleo Diet. I have experienced this with clients in the first few weeks before but she has been on the diet for a little over a month and this has only just surfaced. Do you have any thoughts?

Mark J. Smith, Ph.D.

Hi Dr. Smith,

Thank you for your question. This is a temporary occurrence for some people when they transition to the Paleo Diet. I believe the low energy stems from the combination of 2 factors:

1) A lifetime of metabolizing glucose and stored muscle glycogen. When you get your only carbs from fruits and veggies, the carbohydrate content of the diet is severely reduced, and thus may initially lead to low blood sugar and lethargy.

2) The inability of peripheral tissues (i.e. muscle) to effectively use beta oxidation of intramuscular triglyceride as a substrate because flux through these pathways has been neglected for a lifetime. Once dietary CHO is reduced, then muscle must rely upon lipolysis from adipocytes as the major energy source, along with esterification of these free fatty acids at the muscle/blood interface in order to increase the intramuscular triglyceride pool.

This process takes about 1-2 months to occur in typical muscle glycogen compensated Westerners, and longer for women than men. Increasing the fat content of the diet and increasing fruit intake during the transitional phase will probably help with these energy issues.

So interesting!  That's longer than I thought!  Thanks for sharing!

That is far beyond the average time most people here have taken to start experiencing more energy (from what I have read in threads).

I think the week or two we focus on here is the transition to ketosis.  I don't think Cordain generally recommends levels of fruit consumption low enough for ketosis, and I think he's focusing on a different transition - or maybe the same transition happens more slowly if you don't cut carbohydrates to the point of ketosis.

Hi guys,
I have been patient. I have been eating virtually no carbs just very good quality meat with fat.

I still feel tired almost all the time but really slump in the afternoons and then again around 8-9pm.

I am sleeping 7-8 hours and still feel I need more rest.

Any suggestions. I certainly haven't had any big energy boost.
I love the food but am getting kind of discouraged.

 :(

For me avoiding carbs from fruits makes me really tired. I play sports often though.

Have you had your thyroid tested?

Yes, I had a recent series of blood tests and everything is normal.

You think I need carbs from fruit in preference to carbs from Veggies.

I have been tired throughout. with and without carbs. :(

It is making me feel very low. physically and emotionally.

Do you happen to know the values for the thyroid?  You can have sub-clinical thyroid problems, where your numbers a techincally 'normal' but you still have symptoms.  Two of which are difficulty losing weight and being tired, particularly afternoon slumps.

i queried that at the time. Because my symptoms were so typical of a thyroid problem.
But I was assured my test was bang in the middle of the 'normal' range. I don't have the actual numbers - sorry.

Is there anything I can do to stimulate the thyroid myself?

Without doing any harm I mean.
