It sucks, i can't even do 1 chin-up
« on: May 08, 2011, 08:14:16 PM »
i used to think i should be able to do one clean chin-up..
yet after reading what it means to do 1 chin-up (down and up, not halfway down & up)
it appears that... yup, i'm the bunch that can't even do one..

I just wonder, if negatives to failure for 3 sets per workout will help me.

Or should I add couple exercises (like lat pulldown...etc..) to each workout if i really wanna improve on it?

it sucks. cuz i think pull up (& chin-up) is the coolest thing on earth.

Also i'd like to know what the paleo approach would be..(how did people used to do it..?i think they did it since they were young..so they lift lighter weight)

(p.s. I've been working out 2 weeks, went up 2 Kg already. not a lot i guess cuz i'm having exams)

try climbing trees as if your life depended on it... say a wild animal was chasing you.

try standing on a chair so some of your weight is on your legs - gradually reduce the weight you put of your legs

Do you work out at home or in a gym?

i work out at gym..i dunno if u guys can imagine..but flats (apartments) here are
1. super expensive
2. multi (up to 60 something) levels
3. super small

so i work out at my clubhouse gym..which sucks..
my school is pretty cool..so i can do assisted chin-ups when i am at school..
but i live far away from sku..so i wanna know alternatives other than that

A doorway pullup bar and iron woody pull up assisted bands would be an alternative to use at home/cheesy gym.

Bodyweight rows are another alternative.

Bodyweight rows are a great way to build up to a pull up, if you have the equipment for it.

Work in a strength set/rep range (such as 3 sets of 5) to focus on improving your strength:bodyweight ratio.

Negatives are a great exercise, top of the bar and slowly lower until your arms are fully extended.

Some people like to do a dead hang from the bar and pull themselves up a few inches to strengthen the latissimus dorsi in the position where the arms are fully extended. How beneficial this is I can't personally say.

When strength improves, add a small hop as you pull yourself up, then lower yourself down slowly. Gradually reduce the hop. Or alternatively, start slightly higher off the ground and pull yourself up in the smaller range, but continue to lower yourself until your arms are fully extended. Gradually reduce the height you start at until you are able to pull up from a dead hang off the bar.

And be patient with it! :)

You could try the lat pulldown, same muscles used. That would help you strengthen them up

Ghostman1's suggestion is pretty good.

Just three weeks ago, I couldn't manage a single pull-up (or chin-up).

After using some of the bicep exercise machines, I worked up to about 10 (moderately easy) repetitions at one-third of my body weight.

Now I can manage around three to four pull-ups.

Cheers~! And good luck!

Don't feel bad I can't do one either. I have little to no upper body strength but just started intense cross fit, which I can already feel helping. First week in and I can already hold myself up better on side planks and I can actually do push-ups NOT using my knees! Chin ups will come eventually!
