Officially a freak job :/
« on: March 17, 2011, 11:28:28 PM »
So, I was diagnosed with benign hypermobility syndrome, which is why my shoulder is taking longer to heal.  It is just a super loose joint.  Well, technically all of my joints are super loose.  It doesn't mean anything bad, just that i need to prevent injury and rehab might take longer.  Sticking with exercise and making sure I do strength training is the best way to prevent injuries, so I shall just keep doing what i have been doing.

Meg, A real basic strength program is your best bet, ie.Starting Strength, Stronglifts, etc....

I would avoid those P90X wannabe circuit routines. No one gets strong from that type of training.

Agree with above comment, but any strength training is better than nothing.  Most women need a lot of encouragement to do squats and deadlifts on their own.

Actually in my current studies I'm learning that really only training for maximal strength has carryover. GPP type programs (Crossfit,P90X, etc..) have no carryover to any other activities and they do not build strength. They are simply calorie burners. In terms of conditioning they only benefit their own programs.

I often recommend this site for great strength training info...

http://www.stumptuous.com/

It's very much focussed on old school basics (squat, deadlift etc.) and targeted at women.

I already do squats, not with a huge amount of weight, yet.  I used an 18# bar last time.  I really like squats and am pretty excited about adding more weight.  I will have to keep an 'eye' on my left knee since last time it kept popping at the fibular head (old injury) it doesn't hurt, but it feels weird.

Deadlifts will be new to me, and I will admit to being a little afraid of them, but I think I can do them.

I also already do overhead press with dumbbells, so doing it with the bar shouldn't be too much of a change.

So a few of these will be new, and some I already do.  The changes will be in the way I go through the reps and sets and how much weight I use.

From the things I have gathered are the basics I already have incorporated: push-ups, chin-ups, overhead press, squats and rows.  And inclined dumbbell chest press, which I guess I should replace with bench press (or do I need to, does it matter?)

@overhead press - I really like the Lumberjack Press over the standard OH press. Much more stable position for the shoulder.

@incline DB Press is great! No need to bench press.  Just make sure you retract and depress your scaula for the whole movement.

Oh, I like the look of that one.  I think I saw a guy doing those with the sandbag.

@ Wlfdg

you said you were learning from your studies about strength training, where do you get your information from, I would be really interested in developing a pure strength and density program and feel that everything I am taught in college is flawed.

I'm finally finishing my education online. To behonest I'm not real impressed with the curriculum. I just need the "paper on the wall".  ;)
As far as my own personal developing philosophy I like Charles Staley's work for density training, as well as Pierre Roy.

Exactly, I want to be a gym teacher when I grow up.

Nice, hopefully you can be better than the PE teachers from my school. All they did was talk on their cell phones while we walked around the track
