wow, i feel awful
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:57:26 AM »
ok so i was doing really well on paleo, and lost a stone in 15 days :), then i got ill with a stomach virus bug thing abd couldn't keep anything down and doctor told me to just eat what i was able to keep down this happened to be crap food, chinese, kebab, weetabix with hot milk all the things i shouldn't be eating i also stopped writing my food diary any way that was at the beginning of last week and this week we had hardly any food in apart from what was left in the freezer, so meat and veg, and fish which i know is ok but was having other non paleo food with it, and this week i have eaten loads which i know i shouldn't be eating, ben and jerrys cookie dough, chocolate, fizzy drinks, chinese, and i feel like i have lost touch with eating caveman and lost site of my goal. I took my husband into toys r us to look at 'babies r us' to see if that kicked started me again, def made me think and cry in the middle of the shop.... so i weighed myself and i have put 6lb back on :( i am so upset and angry with myself. i have till july 30th to get to a BMI of under 35 before i can start the fertility treatment. I really need to get motivated again, we went food shopping and brought aload of meat and veg in again, then had 1 last blow out of chinese so i am startign again tomorrow. i think encouragement is needed guys. thanks. Amy xx

Hey it happens, just forget about it and look towards the future. Feeling bad about it will only make it worse.

For future notice, if it takes 1 cheat meal to keep you going, go ahead and have that cheat meal and then keep being paleo. Don't let perfection get in the way of good.

What is it that draws you to Chinese food so much? There's a lot of Chinese food that is close-enough to be fine as long as you don't eat the rice or noodles. Sure, the sauces are usually a little off, but no one ever claimed you need to be perfect.

And I can't help but notice that the "foods you could keep down" when you were sick were a little... off. I mean, usually foods that "keep down" are all one specific kind - maybe you can only drink broth, or starch or something. But you ate a huge variety of stuff. It sounds to me like this was more of an excuse than anything else. It sounds to me like you let yourself cheat because you felt sick.

Now don't get me wrong, I do that too. I've had a head cold for about a week and have eaten lots of chocolate in that time. But I didn't stray far. You need to set some limits for your cheating. Don't do the "well, today is lost. Might as well chow down" thing. Say something like "well, if I'm going to cheat, it has to cost under $5" or "I have to at least make it at home" or something. Some very simple limit that's going to make cheating an inconvenience. It doesn't seem like it currently is for you. It seems the opposite - that eating paleo is an inconvenience.

in answer to your question, i think it is the taste and me been lasy and not wanting to cook. In relation to the other things you both said, yeah i suppose you are right i was probably using my illness to eat what i wanted and not what i should have been. I am now fully focused and back on track.

Thanks guys

I recommend going back and writing down all the cheats in your food diary, as best you can remember them.  The diary is for data; that way you can go back and see what happened, which may allow you to do better the next time.

Doctors don't approve of paleo, so they're not going to give paleo friendly advice.  You have to do some filtering yourself.  With a virus, you shouldn't have to eat anything at all - just make sure you get enough water, or maybe broth, to drink.

Good luck.

Sorry to be the hard one on here, but maybe you aren't angry enough with yourself.
And maybe if you struggle with motivation you do not believe in what you are doing.

A simple question. Do you want to get a BMI under 35? Yes? Yes 100% or yes 90% because it'll be a lot of work? Well, until it'll be 90% you will struggle with motivation.
Pick up your butt, throw away (or give to charity or anyone else who may want them) all what you shouldn't be eating, go out for a walk/run/enrol in a gym/lift something heavy/do something. And show yourself and the world you can do better and you aren't one of those women 'struggling with motivation', that is another name for a word they don't like to say "excuse".

"You can have excuses or results, not both."

think about it

I second what PaleoRainy said.

It's a little soon for me to get up on my soapbox :), so I'll just say that this isn't a decision you make just once. You make the decision to change you life for the better everyday, as many times a day as you face temptation. You have to learn to have the presence of mind to say 'no' every time in order to get it to work. And you can learn this, if I can learn it, you sure as hell can.
