Food ideas when sick
« on: November 09, 2011, 03:20:12 PM »
My 1-year twin boys caught some sort of stomach bug yesterday. Both have slight fevers and diarrhea, and one vomited a little last night. Aside from the occasional teething issues, and mild reactions to some vaccinations, this is the first time they've actually been sick. The good news is they are eating and getting plenty of fluids. They are also getting infant Tylenol to ease their discomfort but they are clearly not comfortable. They are not full-Paleo, a slight bone of contention between my non-Paleo wife and my Paleo-self. But a good percentage of their diet is Paleo.

The problem is that my wife called their pediatrician today for advice and got the "feed them bland starchy food" mantra. Of course, this doesn't sit well with me, but at the same time, I'm not sure what would be ideal. This morning I fed them their usual scrambled eggs and at lunch they had some pureed chicken and butternut squash. They eat rice cereal about once a week (mixed with hard boiled egg yolk) and they get no breads or other cereals normally. The doctor recommended the typical no fatty foods and starchy breads and cereals routine so my wife is prepared to start stuffing cereal, crackers, and bread down their throats.

They still drink a cow's milk based formula that I make for them (Weston A. Price version), which contains a infant probiotic, and we added some super low-sugar live cultured yogurt to their meals today, but I need some better ideas. Anyone?

As long as they want to eat their regular paleo food, keep feeding it to them.  Consider adding some chicken broth.  Find some with as little sugar as possible.  Cook some chopped onions in it if you want.

Maybe offer them strawberries for vitamin C.  You might even give them some chewable vitamin C, especially if they get the rice cereal.

If your wife starts insisting on the other foods, see if you can cut a deal to feed only one of them her way, and one of them fully paleo.  See who is better off after two weeks.

Fatty steak? I know it sounds odd but when I had my last stomach bug, a couple of years ago all that could finally settle it was fat. I don't remember if I had a fatty steak or bone marrow, anyways that was my cure.

Otherwise another thing I had that time was a shake made of nuts and apple juice. Paleo enough, but I'll confess it did not make a lot of difference. starches.

my little boy caught a cold from his nan and I just fed him chicken bone broth. I use 1 onion diced, 3 cloves of garlic diced, half a bunch of celery diced, a handful of mushrooms sliced  (and any other vegies that might be left in the fridge). I use the left overs from one whole chook that I've roasted. It goes into the stockpot whole. I fill with water ( about 6 cups and add more if necessary later as it boils down). Before boiling I add 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and let it rest for an hour. I then put it on a slow boil for about 3 - 4 hours. This was as recipe a friend gave me and I think its the best one I've had so far.

When sick I just scoop the fluid so its easy to sip, my kid loves it and its really easy to digest. I always freeze leftovers for emergencies but you can use it as stock for anything as well (stir fries, other soups etc).
