This is somewhat helpful. I'm not interested in body building. Tried it, not my forte. I do body weight exercises, core workouts and ride my bike a lot. I think I'm closer to the otter mode look than anything.

I'm definitely at the lower end of my normal scale. I wouldn't want to lose any more weight but there doesn't seem to be any tendency to go in that direction now that my weight's stabilized between 145-148.

I was mainly curious to see if anyone had dropped to the low end of their normal scale by eating paleo.

I'm a paleo eater who was moderately thin to start and lost weight, so now I'm substantially skinnier than the norm for someone my age. It's a bit disconcerting as I weigh less than I did in high school.

I'm sure that all the paleo posters on this thread also kill their own game, eat it freshly dead and raw or over a smoky fire, chew gamy meat and pick their own fresh herbs and veggies grown wild. Otherwise, you're not a paleo eater either are you.

Always refreshing to see how quickly people condemn anything that deviates from their religion.

Coconut Bliss is my drug of choice these days, but like any sensible paleo-like eater, I eat it occasionally and not as a regular thing.

Hi everyone,

I haven't been on the board for awhile. After reading the usual dietary nonsense sometimes I feel a need to come here just to read what other paleo-type folks are talking about. Very reassuring.

Anyhoos, I've been pretty strictly paleo for about a year. Took me many years before that trying to be paleo and not getting it done, so about a year really paleo. Not real strict, but 95-98% paleo eating.

I used to weigh 155 in high school, then gradually gained weight until I was 165 or thereabouts. Any more and I start getting a gut, which happened a few times.

After going paleo, I started losing weight and now am around 145. I'm 6'1" and thinner than what people consider normal these days. Of course, the median is really kind of fat by historical standards.

I had one friend get kind of weird about it like I was way too thin. I think they were just judging me by their standards. I feel perfectly healthy, more so than ever, have lots of energy and by all apparent standards in great shape.

I'm curious if anyone else has dropped weight to below their 'normal' range, perhaps even below their lowest previous weight? I've read about people not losing as much weight as they want, but not much about that people lose more weight than they want.

I feel like I eat a lot of food, the usual paleo fare and don't scrimp on portions. If anything I think I eat too much fruits and carbs by typical paleo standards so wondering why I don't maintain a higher weight.

I tried this for three weeks. My hair consistently felt kind of greasy, sort of not clean but not exactly awful either. Didn't lie well and looked kind of flat. I finally gave up and went back to using Dr. Bronner's on my hair. Works for me. I don't think my hair is particularly exceptional, but this experiment didn't seem to work for me.

Today's smoothie:

Two types of dark green leafy vegetables, about 5-6 leaves. Half cup of frozen organic blueberries, smidgen of cinammon, banana, almond milk, a little water. Tastes great.

I read that paleo people often would eat quite a lot of vegetation in their diet. I don't know that this was true globally, or just certain populations. For myself, the greens are what typically would be going stale in my refrigerator. Dark greens are the foods you are supposed to eat that somehow never manage to make it on the plate regularly. And there's a heck of a lot of nutrition in them.
This way I actually consume them because the smoothie tastes great and they rarely go bad in the frig.

Getting enough sleep and not trying to defeat your body's wisdom by staying up late night after night is great advice. My routine is bed by 9-930, up at 530. I don't try to get 9.5 hours. I don't think I could sleep that long. I use a sunrise simulator to wake up and I keep the bedroom pretty dark with solid curtains.
I currently don't use any supplements. I've used vit D in the past among others, but I never see any real relationship between my well-being and supplements.
I take a walk every morning now after sunrise to get outdoors for at least 20 minutes a day walking in the light. I moved to a rainier climate (Oregon from California) four years ago and it really threw me for a loop...depression, winter SAD. Now I just flow with it, enjoy the weather, try to stay in tune with the elements instead of wishing for sun.
Paleo helps a lot. I have a dark green smoothie daily and I am pretty liberal with fruits and carbs. I also meditate, which helps a lot. I feel better than I have in 20 years.

I can look at that two ways. I learned about paleo when Neanderthin came out. I was doing the Zone diet at the time, one in a long list of dietary fads I tried. Macrobiotics, vegan, whole-food vegetarian...the mind reels. When I read Neanderthin it made a lot of sense to me. I read the paleodiet page on the Internet and the reasoning behind it just added up a heck of a lot more than vegan/vegetarian/diet-of-the-month screeds. I couldn't seem to stay on the diet, though. I've tried many times over the years and always ended up feeling deprived, or get freaked out about too much fat, or get food cravings that I would finally give in to.
I finally took stock of my physical condition. Grains give me inflamed tendons, kind of a low-level throb and ache in them especially the elbows. My energy would fluctuate or be kind of low and I have experienced depression I think due in large part to my probable low-level allergy to grains. I just didn't have a robust feeling of wellness.
I began drinking a dark-green smoothie as part of my paleo diet and that seemed to stop the cravings I would get in previous attempts. It's been since October 2009 now and I don't see any reason why I can't go on like this indefinitely. Definitely feeling better, stronger and have lost about 15 lbs on an already slim frame.

I'm wondering if any one has a nice PDF or something that I could print out of paleo diet foods and not allowed foods. In my family, my significant other will sometimes conveniently forget the food I don't eat and prepare dishes with stuff that I don't really want to eat but sometimes do out of hunger, or a feeling that I don't want to reject food.

If I have a list on the refrigerator, it's kind of hard to pretend you don't know what's on there.

I wonder if my eating pattern will evolve over time to include more fasting. At the moment, I eat in a fairly patterned routine that seems to support me during the day. If I skip, I start getting hints from the body that I'm hungry, then I get a bit spacey or lose my concentration.

Wow. I'll keep that in mind next time I'm tempted by some favorite ex-treat. Not only does food taste way better to me, but I eat almost every bit of the food I buy. I used to throw out quite a bit of the greens and stuff I'd buy because it was good for me, kinda like buying the broccoli only to see it wilt in the frig.
Nowaways, it all goes bit by bit, dark greens and all. No waste unless I forget it's in there.

I have a little chocolate powder in a green smoothie every day, just like I have a cup of coffee every day. Easier to just give in than resist.

I had the same reaction as you. I tried many times to go all paleo but kept falling back into less helpful dietary patterns. I would get bored, get worried about fats and my heart, or get urges to eat wheat, dairy and other non-paleo foods.
I started making a green smoothie in the morning which really conquered my food cravings, then the rest was getting support from forums like this and just giving it a real try.
Once acclimated to the diet, I find food tastes better than it every did before. Perhaps my digestive system is getting healthier, or the food I eat is more aligned with my biology. Whatever it is, food tastes way better than when I was a non-paleo veggie/vegan/SAD/semi-paleo sorta eater. I mean WAY better as in remarkably so to my palate.

Okay, thanks for the tips. I'm working out since I started Paleo so starting to get some results. My chief concern is something along the lines of the incredible shrinking man...where does it stop? Not really a problem, though. It's more that I've been so cultured to think of people in a certain physical norm that it freaks me out a bit to vary in this particular fashion. All good though. Hopefully I'll look like Renaldo in a year or so...in my dreams I think.

Hi all,

I've been fairly paleo for about 3-4 months now. By fairly, I mean my diet is almost totally paleo. I eat fairly strictly in terms of what I eat, though I probably tend to eat more carbs in the form of fruits than is the norm from what I perceive.

I started out about 160-65 lbs. I'm 6'1", fairly slim build. I'm now down to 146. My weight has been dropping pretty regularly about a pound a week or two. I was surprised to see it at 146.

I weighed 155 in high school and have never really gotten much beyond 165 in my whole life.

I've had a few friends exclaim how thin I looked. I feel like I eat plenty of food, my energy level is decent, not spectacular, but better than my SAD diet days for sure.

My BMI is down to around 19 now.

Just wondering if anyone else had this, that their weight dropped down more than they were expecting? I don't think it's a problem but still wasn't looking to be really gaunt or anything. I'm working out now so starting to get a little more muscular.
