Miscellaneous / My bad cholesterol doubled...
« on: August 19, 2011, 05:39:19 PM »
I went in for my yearly physical and my doctor called me right back saying she was worried because my bad  cholesterol had jumped from 106 to 218. Totaling my cholesterol to 304.... it had been 106 for a few years straight and now it is 218... Started paleo in May of this year, I am 30 yrs old, 5'1 and around 133. The only thing different that I know I have done was change my diet... I am told to stop eating beef and pork or go on medication to lower my cholesterol. Thoughts?

Ok I learned my lesson. No more fruits, dairy, no mixed drinks, limit on hard liquor. Dump all bad foods from that house.

Update on foods I made.

meat loaf

(grass fed beef, egg, almond flour, flax seed, cilantro, mushrooms, onions, seasoning)

(chicken, onions, red peppers, coated and marinated in lemon, lime, parsley, cilantro,  jalapeno, seasoning)

Progress Reports & Photos / weight gain :(
« on: June 30, 2011, 09:38:40 AM »
My progress has not been very good. I think I gave up half way because I wasn't seeing the results that I wanted to see after the 4th week and gave into a few unnecessary temptations. Just a little bite of this here and there really messed me up.. I think my body got used to the bad food intake and I was having cravings all over again.

This last week and a half:
I still ate as I did before, but added fruit (4 servings a week) and a little dairy (one serving a week of milk) then I started having cravings and had maybe 9 bites of carb a week. I started feeling bloated, felt my cravings coming on, and after weighing myself I've gained about 2-3 lbs.

So my question is...
If fruits trigger my cravings... I would need to cut it out completely correct?
And is it ok to assume that once you go paleo, any cheat in form of carbs will make you gain much faster and easier?

I'm starting up again on the stricter scale. Feeling very disappointed in myself.

i had my first alcohol experience this weekend after going paleo and it wasnt a nice one.

i am allergic to some types so I usually just stick with crown, hen, or patron... anything cheap I seem to react to.

friday i had a mixed drink with tequilla in it, then a mango martini, then some wine. by the time i was having wine, i had a horrid headache... went home and was super dizzy and did not feel good at all.

saturday i was at a wedding and had some wine, black label with a little coke, a little jack daniel with coke... and a little more of who knows what and suffered from a really bad headache and nausea... the nausea was not because I was drunk, it was an awful feeling.  I was vomiting but no liquor was coming out... just solid food that i had for lunch... = kale chips

So paleo + alcohol = headache and nausea?? my stomach is still upset today :(

Exercises / Is what I'm doing helping?
« on: June 17, 2011, 09:10:07 AM »
Just a quick background.
Been on paleo for almost 5 weeks. lost 5 lbs
30 yrs old
My BMI is 25.3

I am pretty out of shape in a sense that I am always out of breath walking up stairs, cant do a single regular push up, forget about pull ups, and my max on a single dumbbell that I could do reps on without a problem is 5lbs. Never been athletic and never been very good at working out.

I started by walking around the block once... then eventually was able to walk for an hour. Later I followed the p90x for a few weeks until I noticed it was not working for me, and tried insanity for a few weeks which I liked. I could not finish one single session, but I tried as much as I could. After my surgery I was back at square one and started my walks on the treadmill since starting up paleo.

I recently started doing dumbbell exercises (with my 5lbs) with sit ups while watching tv if I am too tired for my treadmill. The next day I'll walk/light jog followed by some dumbbells and sit ups. I do sweat a lot but I am wondering if these "not so strenuous exercises" are a waste of time? I am thinking any exercise is better than none until I gain more strength and stamina...?

Once I feel better while exercising, I'd like to try Callanetics (thanks avelin) or Insanity again.

Diet and nutrition / Omega help
« on: June 14, 2011, 12:23:46 PM »
I've been reading about the Omega this and that... and am wondering how important this is for me? I am not good at calculating, memorizing, keeping track of my food intake... so counting the Omega in foods, I probably won't be doing for a while.

What should I be watching out for? Anything I should be telling my doctor about?

Miscellaneous / what is paleo?
« on: June 09, 2011, 09:43:25 AM »
What is paleo...? is what I hear when people ask about my new diet.

Is there a simple, paleo for dummies, way of explaining it without me having to have them google it?

(sorry if this has been brought up already)

Food Journals / Ayami's new food journal
« on: June 08, 2011, 02:02:09 PM »
Here is a more detailed food journal (than my blog)....

Some of the dishes I tried over the weekend.
Kelp chips... omgggg are they my fav thing now... but is too much... too much? Olive oil, pepper, garlic seasoning (ms. dash?), lemon. In the oven for 12 min and you get this thing that tastes like a veggie seaweed... yumm...

Fridays dinner, bought chicken rotisserie and had some with boiled spinach + bacon. I didnt eat much as pictured.

Saturday I made egg cupcakes!!! Heard about it through Sophia :) I couldnt find my food processor so I just blended everything in a blender (even the egg LOL lazy!!!) 3 eggs, 2 strips of uncured bacon, 1 green onion, one green peppers, handful of spinach, and put them in cups of organic low sodium ham. turned out VERY yummy... I made 9 and ate 4.5 of it. With my kale chips :)

(Saturday intake: 750~800 cal, 29g carb, 11g fiber, 85g protein)

Dinner, found a recipe online for pork chops and attempted that. Didnt like it very much lol. Called for pork loins, dijon mustard, onions, chicken broth and I added some seasoning with mushrooms. Probably why I only ate one of the pictured below.

Sunday I made an omelet with left overs that I had.  3 eggs, ham, 3 bacon strips, zucchini, green onions, green peppers... I think thats it? Made a huge pancake thing and split in half. I could have probably ate the whole pancake... but I decided to share. (awwwwwwwwwww...)

(Sunday intake: 550~600 cal, 24g carb, 0 fiber (really??), 28g protein)

In between the day I had some sardines, and grapefruit... My first fruit since I started paleo.... is that ok? I dont know!

the below is just boneless pork chop. I put coated it with bacon fat and grilled it. The veggies are some kind of a huge bok choy that I love. I just boil it and season with pepper.

Diet and nutrition / Eating out at a restaurant
« on: May 31, 2011, 07:54:51 AM »
I'd like to start this new topic because I eat out a lot... Probably too much. I'd like to get feed back on the things I have been ordering to see if it is paleo enough for restaurant food? I know it is best to prepare and bring food to lunch but I just cannot do it. (Stressful just being at work).

This is what I had yesterday at Acapulco. Chicken tacos (did not eat tortillas), substituted the beans for extra veggies. The who thing with  lime tasted so yummy... too good to be true?

Progress Reports & Photos / Update so far - sorry no photos lol
« on: May 31, 2011, 07:36:35 AM »
My second week ended and was not very pleased with the results... but I guess I only have my self to blame?

First week was great, lost 3 lbs. But this week, only 1. I am thinking it is due to my lack of exercise. First week I walked about an hour a day, 5 days in the 7. 2nd week, I only did 30 minutes of walking twice. (fatigue and headache). This week I worked on taking on more calories, breaking the 1000 mark, except for the last three days where it was 500-800.

So what did I learn? I need to get my butt on the freaking treadmill to really see results. -_-

My goal is to lose 30 lbs but I guess 20 would be my realistic goal lol. So in this rate, I guess I will be posting after photos in 20 weeks.  :-*

Found a recipe for this online but I just added more bacon to it. I love bacon!!!!

(preheat at 400)
I got 4 large chicken breast because they were on sale at Henry's market :)
Washed them with water
Cut open the middle without going all the way in
Pepper and chopped up sun dried tomatos in the chicken. (I should have added much more, maybe 2 layers of tomatos!)
Wrapped the bacon all around to basically close up opening of the chicken
(I put tooth picks in it just in case they opened up)
After 30 min, I set it to broil and watched it sizzle for about 5 min to make the bacon nice and crispy :)

Diet and nutrition / chocolate help
« on: May 27, 2011, 05:43:57 PM »
Ok no chocolate cravings yet... but curious. I know nothing about chocolate and the % that people are talking about here. I found this bar... how good/bad is this one?

yes taken with my iPhone lol

Diet and nutrition / bacon all day everyday?
« on: May 27, 2011, 09:39:41 AM »
This might be a stupid question but what are your thoughts on eating bacon for every meal? My appetite has gone down since I started Paleo 11 days ago and am having a rough time eating more than 1000 cal. (STILL, for those of you who have been helping me by reading my blog).

The only thing that I can never resist, no matter how full I feel... is bacon and eggs. I look forward to my mornings and even though I am running late for work, I will always make my 2 eggs and bacon for breakfast. Instead of skipping meals, is it ok for me to just have eggs and bacon with vegetables for every meal?? (I think this is because I had been bacon deprived for the last 30 years. Been told how bad bacon was for me and all...)

Diet and nutrition / Paleo cheat
« on: May 26, 2011, 01:17:29 PM »
I have lost my cravings for sweets but when I'm faced with one, I hesitate, and turn around... it is so very hard but I do. I've lost the cravings but I think about them for a while after seeing them.

What are some of the things you just cant say no to?

How long did it take you to get over some of your old "comfort" foods?

From the below, which are probably the least of the evil? And what happens to me if I do cheat? (Other than getting sick which I've already experienced, accidentally) Are there alternatives to the below that'll make it less harmful? (currently I am not taking any dairy or fruits)

fruit smoothie
Ice cream
dark chocolate covered almond
fruit tart
