Diet and nutrition / Back on the wagon/Baby carrots as snacks
« on: August 12, 2011, 10:43:18 AM »
Ok, so I'm back on the paleo wagon today.  Ideally, I'd like to be able to do breakfast and supper and possily a small fruit as dessert.
I am so overweight, I am miserable. I am growing out of my size 22 pants and 2x tops.  DH's body is perfectly muscular, very little fat.  I feel so completely awkward, especially in the bedroom :(  It is a miserable existance.

I have a very hard time psychologically letting go of my 'trigger' foods. I snack when I'm stressed also, I can be overly full and stressed out and I'm driven to the kitchen for something to shove in my face to relieve that stress.

Aaaanyway, lots for me to overcome after 34 years of this habit.

Also, are baby carrots an ok snack?   I can make that my go-to snack, it's in a bag and easy to access.  Just don't know if they're too 'sugary' as I'm confused and mixed up from trying Atkins previously.

Exercises / Sprinting

Tell me about sprinting.  :)
I have my laptop set up on top of my treadmill and can plod along slowly or at a good clip, elevation or flat.
Just now I decided to just sprint as fast as I could (turned out to be 6,8mph) for as long as I could (little more than 30 secs) before I got uncomfortable and wanted to stop.
HOw long between sprints and how many sprints on average do you do?

Thanks :)

Diet and nutrition / Where can I get tallow and how to prepare/use it?
« on: March 11, 2011, 10:04:38 AM »
I am not sure where i can get some tallow? Should I try whole foods?

Also, do you have to cook it down or do you just put a dollop of it raw into the pan and it melts on its own?
Thanks :)

Diet and nutrition / Proper Portions for a 5'6" woman
« on: March 11, 2011, 08:28:47 AM »
I am trying very hard to do paleo/low carb as I am a LOT overweight, at 236lbs currently  :-\

Every day I just do not know how 'much' food to put on my plate.  Psycologically, I always have this feeling of not getting enough, which may be due to having been on several diets since the 2nd grade.  I ate the same things as my skinny sister, but then was restricted because I was overweight.

Anyway, what would you say a 5'6" woman should eat per meal?
Such as how many eggs?  How many ounces meat per meal?

The more I read about this diet and that diet, (the varying low carb ones and paleo) the more confused I am!  My doctor said "low carb with a small amount of fruit per day" which sounds like to me to be Paleo.  Atkins is feeling a bit too greasy to me.

Are there any ladies my height at a normal weight, and what did you get down to and find reasonable to maintain?  Do you exercise? How much/how many days per week?
I am so tired and depressed about my life- it's defined by being overweight- and that being such a major issue to all- myself, of course, but to my DH (he is concerned), my family, my doctor.  Yet, all my bloodwork is outstanding, by the way. I just carry around about 70lbs excess fat.  :-[
Thanks for the help!

Today's Food:
B: 3 eggs
L: 8oz thin cut way too chewy steak (working on eating up all the lean stuff I have in the freezers)
S: 1/4 cup almonds
D: chicken breast cut up, mixed into stir fry mix (veggies only, no seasonings or sauces)
S:Apple with organic peanut butter (not sure if this is considered ok on paleo.)

I want to do the very best for my health. i've been overweight too long.  Currently at 237. ALready down from 246. For a 5'6.5" girl... ick.
I don't plan on weighing too much, relying on the mirror, because it's more than obvious from a glance in the mirror that there is much more work to do.

Just had a ton of bloodwork done for my swelling issue (legs and feet, can be very swollen at times I can't bend my feet/toes).  All the bloodwork is amazingly good.  Cholesteral is 154, glucose is 81, and the allergy food panel came back negative for everything- my Dr. is skeptical and is getting me a referral out to an allergist for a scratch test. So see what comes of that.
I definitely feel like I "react" (swell up) to grains, soy and many of the chemical preservatives and the like.  Dr. thinks I am super sensitive to sodium also.

I'll try to post on here daily of what I eat.

Diet and nutrition / How do you prepare your veggies?

I am in a rut of salad and stir fry and... well I just don't have any appetite for it.
Tell me some of your yummy favorite veggie meals please :)

Diet and nutrition / Back and Puzzled with health problems
« on: January 18, 2011, 12:15:11 PM »
Hi, I'm Shamrockmommy and I was on the board briefly a few years ago.
Now I'm back.  I have fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondyitis and the newest and most annoying thing is edema (swelling) in my lower legs, ankles and feet.  I don't have normal feet, they are always swollen to some degree or another.  I've dealt with the discomfort over the last couple years but I am at my ropes end with the discomfort and pain from the edema and my spine (the spondylitis).
Last week went to a new doc to see if we could figure out just what is causing this.  I am also very overweight, with much diffuculting losing than gaining, even on paleo.  So something is up.  Had 8 vials of blood drawn, peed in a cup, and 4 xrays, I get the results next Tuesday.  I am hoping the tests show SOMETHING as to why I'm so swollen.
The swelling varies, sometimes nearly all the way down, aallllmost seeing bones and my ankle bones but never what a normal person's feet look like.

It seems I swell a lot after eating beef, salty things and too much fruit.  For a while I was on gluten- free substitues for bread, pasta, etc  but my doctor said no grains, sweets (just a small amount of fruit per day and a low carb diet.

Does anyone have any similar iproblmes and what foods would be likely to cause inflammation?  Thanks

Food Journals / Shamrockmommy's Food Log
« on: November 10, 2009, 08:38:02 AM »
Ok, so for my first food log, I am going to put down the foods that I know my stomach has issues digesting and which causes inflammation and worsening of fibromyalgia, spondylitis, insulin resistance and acanthosis nigricans, swollen feet, low energy (exhaustion is more like it).
WHEAT, CORN, RICE, DAIRY and SUGAR.  Not to mention aritificial flavorings, preservatives like MSG and sodium nitrite/nitrates.

I have not been eating very cleanly now for a couple of weeks and really feeling it in my digestion and my hip (spondylitis).

Today's' meals: 11/10
2 grilled chicken breasts topped with salsa (no sugar).

Introductions / I am new and need more encouragement!

I'm Shamrockmommy and I'm new here.I"ve been looking for a forum for support.
Back in August this year, I decided to start Atkins diet. I stuck with it for 2 weeks before I noticed a dusty copy of paleo diet book down in my basement.  I read it and was hooked. I continued to lose weight and have gone down 20lbs, from 235 to 214.  All I had to do was eat lean meat, fruits, veggies and it was a delight steppign on the scale.

POsitive changes have been:  Total "cure" of fibromyalgia.  Pain and inflammation GONE from spondylitis in my hip and spine. GONE!  My feet have always been swollen and they are a normal size and I can shop even in payless shoes now without needing the wide widths!  My shins are also leaner and not as sensitive to touch. I swear touching any part of my body is a bit painful!  My digestion improved, nice quiet tummy, no problems with bm's anymore (could range from explosive to hard to pass). Hardly even passed any gas at all each day!  What a strange but great feeling, after years of unexplained stomach pain. I do think I have an issue with wheat and dairy especially but even the additives to packaged meats give me terrible heartburn.

I'm having some truoble with motivating myself lately. I've slipped and where once I would say no to offers of pancakes or cookies, I say, "oh one won't hurt' but it results in weight gain, stomach discomfort, gas (whoa!), bloating and WEIGHT GAIN.  Since Halloween I've been having a hard time breaking off things like ice cream cones, pancakes, candy, chocolate, etc.

For the most part I do have healthy meals, and I am sure that is helpful but it's not the optimum level of ongoing weight loss I could be achieving. At this point, I'm goign back up, and quickly. 4 pounds up in a week. :(
Every day I wake up "today is going to e different."

Today I over snacked on almonds (unsalted) but it was an all day affair.
I have to get away from snacking or something.

I also discovered after much struggling last week that coffee is a major issue too. I live right near this little coffee shak that's drive through and has a $3 daily special flavored latte.  Mmmm.  But, then I spend the day fighting cravings .

The halloween candy is gone now, but where I was once able to resist/refuse the kids' ice cream cones now I find myself dipping into them too! Ahhh!

Ok, so refocus!  I have found a forum to read and vent at, so that's good, and I also moved my laptop to my treadmill and walk and read/type, so get more exercise and much farther away from the kitchen to stop snacking!

Ok, so give me all your pointers for dealing with my issues, especialy kindly refusing off-limits foods from family and friends.
