Diet and nutrition / Re: Paleo Diet for Athletes
« on: July 19, 2011, 06:15:13 PM »
;) Thank you for all the replies.  I think I need to up the fat.  I am going to try as hard as I can to stay Paleo, I guess the only exception would be add sweet potatoes.  I do workout with dumbells 3 days a week for a little over a hour.  I run at least 3 miles a day, at least 3 days a week also.  I do Weights on Mon, Wed, and Fri.  Run Tue, Thu, and Sat.
Now reading other articles, I was surprised to read that some people put butter on their vegitalbes.  Is butter not Dairy?
I do eat at least eggs and lean meat for 3 meals a day.  I snack on nuts, vegetables and fruit throughout the day.  Any advice on more Fat would be great.  And to those who work out and eat sweet potatoes, when do you eat them?  Post workout, or next meal?

Thank you again

Exercises / Paleo Diet for Athletes
« on: July 18, 2011, 03:17:52 PM »

:o I know this should be in the Diet Forum, but I am looking for People who are on Paldo and workout.  My workout program is great, but my diet needs help.  I have been Paleo for almost 3 weeks now, I still get hungry a-lot, but over all feel better.  Since the first two weeks are over, I have started to run and workout again.  I am reading the book "Paleo Diet for Athletes".  I was curious if anyone on this forum has read that book or is on a pretty good workout program and keeps on the Paleo Diet.  I was wondering what some do for Pre/Post workout meals and or drinks.  I am just looking for advice from anyone who has found a program that works through trial and error.

Thanks

Jay

Diet and nutrition / Re: Caloric intake and the shakes
« on: July 09, 2011, 05:36:11 PM »
I am on day 9 of full Paleo Diet.  First, I am also new and a beginner.  From what you described, I felt the same way.  I cannot tell you exactly the Physiology of why you felt that way, but I can tell you my symptoms improved little by little each day.  Good Job of keeping track of your Caloric intake, I have not really done that, I am going to start.  I did not know that you should eat and not drink your fruits until this Post.  Truth be told everyday I ate eggs for breakfast.  This morning I actually got to sleep in and I got up and made a smoothie.  I used Coconut Mild, Frozen Strawberries, Ice, half of a Peach, Half a Apple, fresh Raspberries, and a Banana.  It was a good break from eggs.

Good luck

Diet and nutrition / Re: Is mayo paleo?

;D I have been on the Paleo Diet for 8 days and going strong.  Not used to it yet, and waiting to see how I feel a few weeks from now.  After reading this Post I have a question.  I was going to make my own Mayonnaise, but after reading the directions, it requires Flaxseed oil.  I was trying to stay away from Flaxseed oil based on other post's on this forum I have read.  Has anyone made Mayonnaise without Flaxseed?  I was thinking of doubling the Olive oil, has anyone done this?  I am open to suggestions.

Thank you

Diet and nutrition / Re: Eggs

Thank you that helped.  As far as the Omega 3 - 6 ratio, does it help if I am currently eating regular eggs, but take Omega 3 Fish Oil, when I eat those eggs?

Thank you

Diet and nutrition / Eggs
« on: July 09, 2011, 04:44:02 PM »
:) I have been eating eggs almost every morning for the last week.  They are easy to make, taste good, good protein.  I can boil them the night before and take them to work, which really makes them easy.  I have 3 each morning.  I guess I am worried, because years ago we were spoon feed that eggs are bad, and now we are being spoon feed that eggs are OK and got a bad rap.  So just curious if anyone has some information on eating eggs every morning.

Thank you

::)  Thank you again to everyone that replied.  I am on Day 7 today and still sticking with it 100%  I feel a little bit better, the headache is gone.  Still feel kind of Blaa at times, but its getting better.  The few people I talked to in person all told me that 6 weeks is about right to feel better or real good.  Just wanted to say thank you.

:o  I had just read on another Paleo Website that has Recipes that Sweet Potatoes are Paleo.  I am confused I thought they were not considered paleo.  Just curious what others think of Sweet potato's.

Thank you.

Recipes and meal photos / does this sound Paleo?
« on: July 04, 2011, 11:02:59 AM »
:D Hello, I am a firefighter and every 9th shift I have to cook.  Now I usually pick at what other people cook, and they actually try to help me out and use olive oil and not salt any of my food.  My turn is coming up, and this will be my first cooking shift while on Paleo.
I was going to take one of my old recipes and tweak it a little.  Just curious if this could be considered Paleo.

Here it is.  I was going to make ceviche.

I use Fish (Pollack), Shrimp. Cilantro, Tomatoes, Avocado, Onion, finely cut cucumber, Jalapeno, Habenero Pepper.  Now I usually add certain salt related spices, which I may do for everyone else, but I will make mine separate.  So by mixing all those ingredients does that sound Paleo or not?

I will make rice and tortillas for the rest of the crew, I will just eat what is listed above.

Thanks

Diet and nutrition / Re: Why don't I want to eat larvae?
« on: July 04, 2011, 09:18:13 AM »
Back in the late 80's I was in Panama in Jungle School.  We Pulled down these tall branches at the top of some Black Palm Trees.  They had these red cherry/berry looking things that were edible.  They were about the size of a small plum.   They had a very large seed and the fruit covered about a 1/8th inch the outside of the seed.  I ate about 3, scrapping the fruit off the seed with my teeth and eating the fruit.  It was very good.  On the fourth one I looked closely after I bit it and had seen the small clear larvae in it moving.  The previous 3 I had eaten had also had them, but I did not know.  The Fruit was good, and I enjoyed eating them before I had seen the Larvae.  After I had seen it, I did not eat anymore.  I have not thought of that incident in a long time.  Reading this I remembered it.  I did not get ill or have any problems from eating them.

Diet and nutrition / Protien Question
« on: July 03, 2011, 10:55:02 AM »
How much and how often should I be consuming protein?  I am 5' 10" and 180lbs.  I want to lose some of the body fat I have and build muscle.  Allot of people stress to lose weight do not eat that much fruit.  Losing weight has never been a problem, its gaining it that has.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you again

Diet and nutrition / Day 3, Is this normal?
« on: July 03, 2011, 10:52:28 AM »
OK I started July 1st.  No Sugar, No Grains, No Dairy.  At only Lean Meats, Vegetables, and fruit.  Prior to this I was a Processed food and Sugar junkie.  On day 3 I feel weird.  My energy is low, I have a headache.  I am still drinking coffee but just plain, no sugar or cream.
Is this normal?  Do you eventually feel better?  I am still sticking with it and will continue to at least the end of the month.

Thank you

Jay

:-\ Sorry I am no expert, I just started  and I posted a simular question.  The replies I got was to stay away from Whey and Soy.  I did not know but Soy is not close to being paleo.  If you get some advice on a shake please let me know.  I am interested.  I did read that some people eat some eggs and then coconut milk to get the protien and energy prior to a workout.
Good luck
